I'll be in Sydney in mid-August this year and would like to do a bit of snorkeling and casual free-diving at e.g. Clovelly. Will I do ok with a full 3 ml wetsuit (plus hood, gloves, and booties if necessary) or should I bring the 7 ml farmer john + 7 ml jacket that I use here in Puget Sound? I'd prefer it if I could get by with the 3ml, because I hate to bring enough lead for the 7+7.

Thanks in advance,
Crow

hire lead?

my mates are all surfing in 3/2's at the moment, but they come out pretty damn cold after 3 hrs in the morning.

We were there diving in March. I wore my 2/3 plus a sharkskin top and was often cool at the end of the dive - I also wore a hood, gloves and booties.

Clovelly was a great dive though - we did it at night. :)

March is when the water is the warmest here but you are coming when its the coldest. You will be cold in a 3ml....

Depends on how much you feel the cold, how long you intend on being in the water etc etc. You could get away with it but after a couple of hours you will be cold. Why not chuck a 3mm thermal rashy in and a 5mm hood. Both are very light but will make a huge difference. Or just hire a neoprene vest and hood from a shop over here.

rent your lead. 3mm is not enough to dive in sydney in august

It depends ... i dive in a 3mm in winter in Sydney, have done for the last 10 years.

Last Saturday i did 90 mins at 17C, and was quite ok.
