Hey hey. california native here who's job has taken him elsewhere. commin home for pretty much the month of january & wanted to know what the skinny is for diving in winter. i'm a pretty new diver & as far as i know i dont have any friends from home that are divers so a dive charter or an area with friendly people would be a must =). heard heaps about how catalina rocks & you can do some good diving off of palos verdes. originaly from torrance but the people i'm stayin with are now in san pedro & gardena. any pointers on where i should hit up while i'm home? also would a 7 mill be enough. unfortunatly its all i got & i dont think i'll have the cash to buy myself a dry suit for christmas =p. thanks in advance =)

ScubaLizard],,
hey bro, you can catch a ferry to catilana and dive there(or a scuba charter).
i suggest getting a hooded vest to go under your 7 mil and i personally use 5 mil gloves, they cost about the same as 3 mils!! happy diving

Look at www.sandeaters.com.

Winter diving here is great, between infrequent storm fronts. Fantastic visibility, warmer water than in the Spring, and lots to see.

Ditto the hooded vest for your 7mm.

Hmmm, nope, no place to dive in SoCal. As Jlyle said, http://www.sandeaters.org dive sites will give you a list and description of dive sites and as good as it is, it does not have all the dive sites.

From where you will be staying diving Malibu, Redondo Beach, Palos Verde or even Laguna Beach would be easily doable.

As for dive buddies, well posting here or on sandeaters will get you someone to dive with usually. Sandeaters (not a club, just a schedule) dives every Sunday. Wrinkles dive once a month. Redondo Beach Vets Park every Wednesday are regular dives.

January is a good month to dive, it the rains don't get in the way. Around here we recommned stahing out of the water for 3 days following a rain of 1/4 inch or more due to bacteria levels in the ocean.

7mm is what I use.

If you're interested in checking out awesome reefs and reef structures up to depths of 68' in Laguna, get on http://www.SouthCoastDivers.com email list and come dive with us. We dive ALL the time: Every Saturday and Sunday; 2nd and 4th Tueday Night; third Saturday on Odd months at Casino Point. Want to dive in between those...there is an active Buddy list.

Best Regards and Happy Diving
