Ya I went to Marineland on Tuesday and the entry was really kinda bad and visibility around the points was horrible. Maybe 5 feet at best sometimes mostly. I read MaxBottom's report after he went earlier this week, and saw I wasnt the only one effected by these conditions.

So today my buddies and I suited up for Point Dume and what a great choice that was! 30 feet of viz easily, tons of fish! tons of sea life! and friendly people who pointed us right to the action. Oh and a huge biggie, no sea urchins! The current was pretty strong but that just made for some fun and embarrassing times when getting in and out of the water (sand is fun when the waves are big, rocks are not!).

We brought our spear guns just in case we saw something big and sure enough I saw a gorgeous sight. Two eyes and a mouth on the bottom could only be one thing and which also happens to be my favorite sea food, a 30 inch halibut!! (I love finding legal ones) I took the shot and he had to be laying on a rock because the spear bounced out. So as he limped away I swam after him while reloading my JBL carbine, which thank god only had a single band on it after doing target practice in my pool (easy reloading). He stopped to lay back down and I finished the job. The whole way back a seal was in close pursuit to get a piece of my halibut, at times I wish a shark was following me instead, those seals for some reason are my biggest ocean fear.

Right after my buddies and I got out of the water, a huge pod of dolphins swam right through the area we where at 10 mins before. It was soo cool!!!
I wish I wouldve learned entry here instead of the Palos Verdes spots because the rocks are so tough to learn on, I will always be a fan of PV but Point Dume was a great time and a great spot for beginners rather it be hunters or photographers.
All in all a great time and now I have tomorrow nights dinner!

Saturday September 1st.
Surface water temp 71, not much different underneath. This is me and my wifes 4th dive after certification. We took our boat to Catalina and stayed in 2 Harbors. We dove Bird Rock, visibility was 25-50 feet and we hit a depth of 55 feet. This place is awesome! It seemed like the dive was only 10 minutes long but we had a blast:D

Dive Site: Leo Carrillo between towers 2 and 3
Date: Thurs. Oct 2nd, 2009 around 2pm
Conditions: Awesome for this site. It would have been nice to go in the morning for high tide, alas there was work. So, we opted for an afternoon dive. Looking at the conditions from ther surface it looked surgy so I thought it wasn't going to be great. When we got out there and dropped down there wasn't much surge and visibility was about 15-20 feet. I hear it usually isn't that clear.
Water Temp: warmer than usual, I think around 60
Visibility: 15-20
Comments: Saw a couple lobster hiding and a ray.

Dove Anacapa off the Spectre on October 2 and 30. Condition were good on both days.
Air 75
Water 65
Visibility 50'-60'
Really great dives and conditions. First class boat and crew + good bbq
Both days we went to under water arch to play with the sea lions. This last trip we made it to Arch Rock and the current wasn't too bad. We saw Bat rays lobster and harbor seals.

Two dives on Catalina at the dive park. A good time was had by all!

Thursday Nov. 19 2009
Location: Ye Ol' Marineland
Time: 7:00-9:00 am
Water: 60
Air: 65
Visibility: 0'-15/20' (on the outside)

Quickly deteriorating conditions as the swell and surge continue to build. The epic conditions of the last few days I am afraid are over. Large surge made for dangerous exit if not timed right. Still a really good dive. (freedive actually -- testing my new yazbeck)

Dive Site: Shaw's Cove & Seal Rock/Dead Man's
Date: Sunday, March 14, 2010; 12:30 & 3:15
Water Temp: ~58 surface; ~52 @ 35 ft.
Visibility: 5'-15'
Comments:
Shaw's Cove: We saw lots of garibaldi - both adult and juvenile (the ones with the bright blue spots). Also present were plenty of small ghost fish with large black eyes (kind of unnerving at first). There were also a large number of sea cucumbers everywhere. We decided not to go through the arch because of the surge going through.
Seal Rock/Dead Man's: The surface swim out was much longer than for Shaw's. However, it was much less surge as compared to Shaw's. Found a ginormous black sea cucumber - roughly the length of my forearm in length and about 3/4 of my forearm in width.

Not bad for the first two dives of the season.

Casino Point yesterday. Sargassum filicinum in its death throes (hurray!!!). Because of it, I couldn't see the two subjects I had intended to film so I spent the entire 65 min dive documenting the death of this noxious invader. Dive report will be published in my next "Dive Dry with Dr. Bill" column later today or tomorrow. The good side... min temp of 60 F with a max depth of 53 f... quite toasty!

13 Mar 2010 - Santa Cruz Island. The crossing was really rough because of heavy chop, so was the return trip but not quite as bad because the wind died down a bit.

The Explorer found two calm coves for us to dive in. Water was on the cool side of 52-F, depth was very shallow with the deepest at 41-ft. Lots and lots of sea urchins with but a hair of giant kelps (as in three stalks). Saw a massive horn shark that was easily 3-ft swimming slowly and majestically as though it owned the joint. Saw lots of sea hares and a couple Navanaxes. Interestingly enough, there were several large calico basses even though there were no kelps.

On the way back, we were treated to a view of three humpback whales, including one that looked small - possibly a mama and baby combination.
