I've been avidly hunting lionfish for the past 2 1/2 years and have been developing my own lionfish container for all that time and now sell them here on Roatan and Utila, Honduras.

What I would suggest for you is a 1/2" PVC tube to be used as a spear holder and a killing tool in one piece. To make it, cut one end square and drill a hole all the way through the PVC, a little further from the square cut end than the barbs of the spear are long....if that makes sense. Not sure I explained it well enough. So, this hole is to fit a tie wrap through to prevent the barbs of your sling from protruding out and accidentally poking someone.

On the other end, cut the PVC at an angle similar to the tip of a hypodermic needle. This end is where you can insert the spear one handed, and the end you can use to pierce the lionfish's skull when it's pinned to the sand by your spear.

If you want you can put some rope on it for a carrying sling or just tuck in your Velcro cummerbund.

Hope this helps.
