Can anyone tell me where I can legally spear in Monterey, or at least tell me how to find out? Looking for Halibut. Thanks!

you can dive just about any where.look for a sandy bottom.try off of del monte beach, we shoot quite a few there or off of lovers pt.

you kinda got to be carefull around lover's as part of the area is closed to spearfishing. i believe that you have to stay outside of the bouy's, I'd check to find out. we usually stay way out side. there are a lot of sandy areas in between the reef structures. the breakwater.... i don't know... they have a LOT of classes there, i'd think about looking elsewhere.... there are a couple of other great forums that have a lot of monterey divers. I.E. bay area divers@yahoo.com,if you would like some more info please P,M. me,ken

Oh yeah, please forgive my ignorance: does my regular fishing license cover halibut and other marine fishing? I must be too lame to figure it out from looking at the DFG site.

No your not ignorant! it takes a phd fg just to try and figure the dfg regs out. yes you regular fishing licience works for halibut and all of the other of spearfishing that you may want to do. Other than in so cal, then you have to have a so cal ocean enhancement stamp. you should check out the dolphin divers of sacrameto web site. (I'm a member) we do a lot of spearfishing and other activities all year long. p.m. me if you 'd like and i'll give you my ph # if you'd like more info. ken

Thanks for the info. I may try and hook up with that group. Might get me out more. I'll stop by their website and check things out.
BTW, I did go by Del Monte, and had no luck. A pair of free divers did, though, so they ARE there.

Basically you can spear anywhere east of the harbor and west of lover's point to the coast guard facilities on Oceanview blvd.
Its a shame we can't spear at the breakwater - just saw a 30" halibut near the big pipe 2 days ago. Made my mouth water.

so i need a map of the restrictions in monterey county for spearfishing? any takers?
You don't *Need* it, but it shows you where the DFG says you can and can't spearfish. Just trying to help.
