Enzoed; what did you think of the island itself? We are thinking of going next Jan 09, just wondering if a non-diver will have fun. I dive and my hubby doesn't. Also where did you stay and would you recommend it?
thanks, choco

I know you directed that at Ed. Sounds like he would say yes.

As for us, we are in our 30s. Our answer is a profound NO WAY. Nevis we would go back to for sure however.

St. Kitts has a long way to go.

We stayed at the Marriott which was opened in 2003 and it looks like they did little to keep the place new. From a distance it looks good (but large), look closely and there is alot wrong. There is a dedicated dive resort (Bird Rock) but that wont suit your husband. The Marriott has golf and the concierge can arrange trips around the island for sightseeing. Very friendly people but avoid town on Saturdays when the cruise ships come in. The beach at the Marriott was the Atlantic and rough at times. Unfortunately, the Marriott appears to be the only "luxurious" hotel on the island. The spa was adequate and the Casino was in the hotel.

I would think other islands like Grand Cayman, Aruba, Curacao amongst others would be better suited for non diving spouse. If you do dive, ProDivers sends a van for you both ways, leaves hotel at 9 AM and you get back around 1 PM...gives you a good morning out

Didn't think you would answer but I just checked the other thread and you answered. thanks

Hi guys and gals.
First off, right upfront, I live on the island and I think the place is wonderful, paradise, incredible!!!
What it is not, is particulary commercialised and consequently has still got a great island lifestyle.
Apart from the Marriot we do not have any "resorts", lots of visitors here stay in smaller groups of villas, and enjoy the experience. (Timothy Beach, Frigate bay resort and lots more). If you want an organised, entertained, canned resort experience then this island is not for you. I am not saying any of that is wrong, just that it is a different experience, some people like it, some do not.
Ok onto diving, I have dived with Austin many times, also I have taken my friends to dive with him. Some dives have been better than others, thats the nature of diving, sometimes the viz is good, sometimes it is excellent. (Did I mention I was a "Brit" so anything over 30 feet is good to me!) However, the dive "service" has always been excellent. Austin will lead a dive, or let you do your own thing. Jermain has always been very helpful and friendly towards me.
I speak as I find, not in defence but in truth!
The dive experience here is not the same as I have found in other parts of the more developed Caribbean. I have experienced that "canned diving" style --- Gear on, in the water for 40 minutes, follow the leader, out of the water, gear off etc. This is not my style, if it is yours, then good for you, enjoy it, there are lots of islands that offer it!
Here the whole thing is more relaxed and for some of us, the better for being so.
Chocoholic, if you want a buddy when you come, PM me, I will take some time off, also check out
St. Kitts & Nevis Travel Forum - MyIslands Community - Index for places to stay, eat etc. Your husband will find lots to do while you are diving!

Thanks for the info. Not sure where we will go but the idea that St.Kitts is still relatively undiscovered appeals to me.

To answer your question, my husband and I went to St. Kitts 2 years ago - I dive and he doesn't and we both enjoyed the week. He fishes so went on a charter twice but we both enjoyed visited the rainforest as well as some beach time. We took a ferry to Nevis and toured around there one day. There is hiking as well and if it hasn't changed in the last couple of years we found it to be a very friendly island.

I think the place we stayed at isn't in business any longer but it was near the Marriott. We walked to a number of good beachfront bar/restaurants and enjoyed the food and atmosphere.

Can't comment about Prodivers because I didn't dive with them.

Enjoy!

Can anyone tell me about the Bird Rock Beach Hotel? BarbaraJ and I are planning to go there next January and all of a sudden lots of terrible reviews are showing up. How about the dive operation there as well?
Thanks,
TedJ
