Forgive me if this a seems like a stupid question. What exactly is the definition of "troll"?

I've been checking out this board for a few months now, and this term seems to be used a lot. I guess I thought it meant, sitting back reading threads, and only saying something when you have something negative to say.

Today I noticed it used in a different context. Like meaning a BS artist.

Can anyone fill me in, so I can appreciate the meaning better:)

Thanks,

Andrew

troll, to go fishing, dragging a bait behind the boat

troll, a nasty critter that hides under bridges waiting for someone to snatch.

Usually means someone tossing out a comment for the purposes of "baiting" a heated discussion.

sorta like someone that drops a sneaky bad fart in a crowded room & slips out & watches the commotion from a distance.

A troll is an honored board member who tends to start the more interesting discussions.

A troll is someone that lives in Lower Michigan, under the bridge.

Troll from Mich.......was there a banana peel on that bridge with a calling card next to it that reads: We don't get paid until you do?

Lets not be slamming the King of Rock & Troll!

A troll is an articulate, well read, person who
enjoys using the English language to exchange
opinion. They are cuddly, playful, and good lovers.

They are hated by engineers who don't understand
any of their good qualities.
