Many of the crew on the fishing charters wear tube scarves
Well, I guess you could do your best to cover every inch of skin in or out of the water, but I've yet to see that anywhere (haven't been to Afghanistan though...).
 
As a blond that goes from white to burnt, and has had skin cancer removed I do my best to not burn and to stay covered up or out of the sun. However this is not always realistic being on a boat out on the water. I use Coppertone Sport SPF30, and try and wear a hat to shade my face. I also wear a rash guard or something light and long sleeved. I work out on a boat and some days its like standing in an oven. The biggest thing is re-applying, and getting the spots that we forget about. We get arms and face etc, but the number of bad burns on the back of legs I have seen, ouchy.
