Your problem sounds like what I went through when I first started in March '03. I'm a little claustrophobic, and I would panic every time I went under water. Turns out I would hold my breath while I submerged. I finally started sticking my face in the water & practicing breathing. I just had a hard time getting over the breathing underwater hurdle.

Of course, It didn't help that my GENIUS dive instructor had us do our CONFINED water dives on the stairs in the Comal River (which has a pretty decent current!). Putting a regulator in your mouth for the first time EVER in a cold, running, river wasn't a good experience. I came close to hypothermia the first day. It is impossible to do a fin pivot with the current pushing you.... I very nearly gave up after that....but fortunately, my husband was already certified and helped me through my hurdles. We just got the certification....then went to a quarry and went through the entire course on our own.

Now, I wouldn't even consider a vacation that doesn't include diving. Since March, we've done dives in Grand Cayman, Cozumel and the Channel Islands, not to mention local quarries and lakes. I have around 25 dives logged..and counting. Hopefully Cozumel again for Thanksgiving, and the Keys in the spring...WHEEEE!!!!

Keep trying....Once you get more comfortable, you will love it! I do! Good luck!
