Consider participating in the Coastal Clean-Up on September 18th in Redondo Beach with me and other SoCal divers.
Dive N Surf is coordinating the underwater cleanup at Redondo Pier and it's free to participate. You can get a shirt for $10 if you want a suvenier of your good deed. I'm pasting part of an email with info on the event. Call DnS @ 310-376-9922 to take part. Divevets.com has more info as well.
"This is the divers opportunity to give something back to the environment. It is one day a year that the pier is closed down for fishing for a short time and we enter the water to clean up what has been tossed into the ocean over the last year from the Redondo Pier. It is very important that we support this effort. Every year there is less and less trash that we pick up. It will never be completely clean but our efforts go a long way towards that goal. We normally have a couple dozen divers who meet early on the Saturday morning for this one clean-up dive. We enter the water near the pier, if conditions allow we go under the pier, pick up the junk, bring it to the beach and volunteers take it from there. Last year this event brought 25 or 30 tons of garbage out of the water worldwide. Lets support this event. It's free. It is a Top-of-the-Bottom (TOB) event, if it will be your first beach TOB event you need 9 more to receive the TOB patch. Call Linda or John to sign-up for this event. I believe T-shirts specially made for this event are available for $10. After the clean-up, DNS is sponsoring the annual Splash Party at DNS. Tons of prizes are usually available and admission is free to dive team members."
