My young mr 12 has been struggling with his reading. Truth is it was just pure lazyness. He just couldn't be bothered reading. It diddn't interest him. But he's really keen now to get his Padi dive licence.

Trouble is mean ol Dad says the only way to get it is to study the good old Padi dive book then do the tests online.
Well he's he's been working through the book -after declaring the words were all just too hard.
Well guess what -he's passed chapter one AND his reading level is up to just one year below his age.
So thanks padi for giving him the motivation to learn to read.

Cool, there is always more than one way to skin a cat, if you can continue to find books on topics that interest him Im sure he'll do well, obviously he can when he really wants too. Congratulations to your son.

Awesome, sounds like a good way to encourage him. Finish your homework and we can go diving... that's a win-win situation if ever there was one.

The trick with kids is to find the lever that motivates them -- you found one, and congratulations!

TSandM,

You bet! The only thing that got our son through high school was when he discovered automotive shop. He is now a journeyman heavy duty mechanic and commercial diver.

Either a lever or a club...

We require students at out dojang to bring in copies of their report cards. We also require them to give their parents and teachers a questionaire before promotional exams.
Bad grades? Bad behaviour? No promotion.

Positive reenforcement is vital. But there is a place for negative too, and "if you don't do your homework you can't (whatever they enjoy)" is certainly a good plan.

Nothing like little incentive get kids motivated. Little bit of both carrot and stick. Do it or else, but if you finish it will be worth the effort.

Besides, my kids have called a lot worse than mean ...
