Personally my instructor was fantastic, very detailed (Taking everything apart.....regs, bcd, everything...........work with tank fills from air - trimix) Maybe I was just lucky to have Tom as my instructor, took us 2 three hour session and what an experience. Probably the most practical Speciality I have ever taken.............to be honest most other Speciality courses are gained through experience and diving more........................This one I found invaluable..

The instructor I had was also very thorough. Tim is an instructor at the LDS, but he is also the equipment repair and service tech, the resident gadget geek and a public safety diver for one of the local agencies in this area. He probably has just about every kind of dive gear and toys you can imagine and multiples of most. We went over everything from daily care and feeding of personal gear to in-depth service and maintenance of regs. He showed me a great deal of information about servicing equipment and had me demonstrate each of the tasks until he was assured I could perform them. His instruction helped me save the dives of a couple of people on a recent trip to FL.

I'm sure I could have figured out how to maintain my personal gear but his very detailed description of the components and his experience made the learning process much faster and easier. For me, it was well worth the price of admission!

It's just like any other course, it's going to depend heavily on the instructor. I took it about 8 years ago or so through my local shop with an instructor I was familiar with. We tore down multiple regs, BC inflators, filled tanks, did VIS inspections, and etc. I got a lot out of it. The sad thing is that I haven't used much of that knowledge since, so I have forgotten a lot of it.
