While we're at it let's not forget that in 1928 Charles "Swede" Momsen tested his first Momsen Lung and by Feb 1929 was able to ascend from the resubmerged S-4 at 207'. This was an oxygen rebreather device utilizing an oxygen cylinder, caustic soda and a counter lung. A similar device, the British Davis Submerged Escape Apparatus came out at about the same time. Which came first is sometimes debated with the nod perhaps going towards Davis; but Momsens efforts cannot be under rated. He basically conceived of, and field tested his idea without official sanction (from the Navy).
