I was taught to equalize early and often.

Also, not to dive with a "stuffy nose". I was also told that taking meds to suppress a cold is dangerous since they might wear off when you're on the bottom.
 
Chewing gum before works wonders, loosens up the jaw, gums, sinuses ect. Same effect as chewing on the plane. Its gotten a buddy back in after calling a dive due to tooth squeeze. I'm a crazy gum chewer and i wonder if its why i've never felt a squeeze ever... that and often clearing.

Had a reverse squeez on one of my molars. It started at about 40 - 35' during an accent from 120'. Dentist found the root of the tooth cracked below an old amalgum cap that was installed with steel pins to the base. Hurt like hell!!!! Dentist pulled it.. no problem sence
