Another thought... earlier this year I was drift diving off Fl. My buddy and I (he had the flag) went off the left and right 'corners' of the boat at the same time. He lost a fin as he hit the water, and didn't decend because of this. Had I failed to signal to the boat and decended by myself, I would have left me without a dive buddy or flag. Yes I would have surfaced when I couldn't find my buddy or flag, but how far from the boat? (Murky surface waters that day, fairly strong current, and 4-6' seas, right after the last hurricane.)
Glad I gave the "ok" to the boat that day.
