How the Gekko is marketed has everything to do with its price - which is what the original poster was talking about. The fact that someone has found a way to get a 'bonus' result from it has nothing to do with Suunto's marketing strategy.

The Gekko and its price have nothing to do with the original poster. He was asking if a D9 was worth the extra $800 over a Vytec DS.
 
And now, the OP is wondering if they would be better of in a safer activity such as Olympic Javelin Catching or parachutless sky diving.

The Gekko is sold at a lower price than the Vytec because it is not downloadable from the factory. That really cool hack changes that. It could also void the warantee if Suunto found out about it, too. It's sort of like paying for one movie and sneaking into two more down at the Cineplex.
