That's because the material that is bonded to the neoprene is Lycra. Lycra and velcro do not like each other. Keep them separated!!!!!

That's not true! Velcro loves lycra it's just that lycra doesn't feel the same way about velcro. It's the same way with my dog and frogs.

Yes, I have a hyperstreach and yes velcro makes it pill. I'd recommend keeping your hyperstreach away from pool water and bleach. Both are good at killing lycra.
 
I had the same thing happen on mine. Since I am super Anal I used one of those sweater pill removers. It seemed to work with no deleterious effects so far (about 12 dives).

Of course, move the velcro away from the suit....
