Think through the type of diving you are doing. Take down only what you NEED and what you probably will need to have in emergencies.

Can't really say if one's carrying too much. It all depends on your dive. Take only what you need. Anything that doesn't add value to your dive, leave them at home.

Dive dependent, but for a recent Northern California dive:

taliesin58:
Am I being too paranoid carrying 3 cutting devices and a backup mask? Also, should I add a reel or finger reel to my kit?

I carry two cutting devices and a back up mask.

I don't even see how some of you even move, let alone get on or off the boat, I only hope and pray some of you are not the ones I get stuck on the boats with....gear rolling all over the place, scrambling through gear bags looking for dye markers, asking your dive buddy if they remembered to get the pony bottles? But then maybe you are diving conditions i'm not interested in?

Okay...by "carry down" I'm assuming you mean on actual dives, i.e. what is physically attached to me while I'm in the water.

If that's the case, here's what I had on over the past three days diving in Seattle (Alki Cove 2 and EUP):

Reg: Aqualung Titan LX
Octo: Aqualung ABS
BC: SeaQuest Black Diamond
Computer: Suunto Cobra
Mask: Atomic SubFrame
Backup Mask: People actually carry a second mask down there with you? On an actual dive? Where do you put it??!! lol
Fins: Atomic SplitFins (an aside to TSandM.. Did some "silting" tests with the Atomics...kicking with my normal modified flutter, I could get within 2' of the silt bottom at Alki without kicking up silt...spent most of my time enjoying the great vis though and cruising about 7' off the bottom...:) )
Exposure suit: O'Neill 7000x Drysuit with attached Bare boots, Seasoft hood, Harvey's Ti2 Kobalt 5mm gloves
Knife/Cutting Tools: Aqualung SqueezeLock (attacked to front of Black Diamond)
Primary: UK C8 eLED

If I don't absolutely need it...I see no need to carry it. I never want to look like a "charm bracelet"...with a ton of extra gear hanging off of me to aid in getting entangled in the first place. (maybe that's the reason why people like carrying 3 or 4 cutting tools? lol)

Cheers,
Austin
