An advantage of an authoritative regime is that areas can be easily locked down and isolated to contain contagious diseases.
This has been done in certain areas where I live, and for sure would not be possible in North America or Europe without causing a ruckus. Unfortunately peoples' rights mean nothing when dealing with deadly diseases, but quarantine is the only way to stop the spread.
Taiwan does not have an authoritative regime and has the best response to the virus anywhere in the world. This is because since 2003 SARS epidemic all travelers are screen on arrival for high temperatures. all the cases here were imported from China, USA, HK, Europe UK and we have no lockdown. People do wear masks everywhere and they were rationed to people by the government using the national health insurance number. 3 masks cost around US 50 cents.
