Just spotted earlier post by BKP Thanks. It seems now that it wasn't a roman handshake at all.
The shake involved gripping each others right thumb.
Sounds kinda odd describing it here, but at the time it was well meant.

Now that is different from what is often called the Roman Handshake.

I've never seen that...??

That handshake is rather common in South Africa and maybe in other parts of Africa as well. It consist of 3 parts. First the normal handshake, secondly gripping each others right thumbs and thirdly the normal handshake again. It is all done in one continuous movement.

It basically means "we are brothers" in a spriritual way.

Thanks Theunis! :thumb:

Just had a great week diving in the Med (no really) and at the end of each dive, after the safety stop, the instructor gave each of us a roman hand shake.
What's this all about? He wasn't messing about and I didn't feel able to ask him.

Cheers
Phil

Maybe he has a phobia for hand transmitted germs and only touches the cooty free zone of the forearm ... just a thought
