Did you know that Crown of Thorns are dried and eaten by some African tribes to grow their TiTi??? Some of you need to start gathering COTS!!!

Now there's a bad ass animal that will for sure make your org.....thing...come to attention. Shark fin? pffffttttt.

I heard a funny one while living in Malaysia. The farm I worked on also produced soft shell turtles. A Chinese Malay guy who worked there told me a lot of Chinese man wouldn't eat turtle.....because as he said, "you see how the head of the turtle pulls back and hides"? :rofl3::rofl3: I loved that one.

If you think that poverty has anything to do with demand for shark's fins, you have never seen Ferraris and Bentleys parked two-deep outside of a Hong Kong restaurant serving $100 bowls of shark's fin soup.

I would not judge a poor person who feeds his family with shark, or by catching shark. I judge the wealthy people who demand it to feed their vanity.
Spain, GB, France, Italy etc are the main suppliers of shark fins from Europe. Cut off the supply, problem half-solved. Any nationals of the named countries should be ashamed of themselves!!!!! Is it a fair comment? Of course NOT.
If it is legal to catch, transfer and sell, then what is wrong of eating it?
I do not eat shark fin, bird's nest, turtle, wild games etc etc and so are many Chinese as well. A very small fraction of them do not represent the whole race. Not many Hong Kongers can afford to run a car let alone a Bentley.
Shabu is widely used in Philippines and most of them are produced in China. Do we blame the whole country to supply it to Philippines?
How would you judege those living at Forbes Park and those living eg Bagong Silang?
Inspector Mendoza slaughtered 9 HK tourists in Manila back in Aug 23rd. Are you suggesting that all Pinoys are trigger happy?

Do you people not realize that Viagra or whatever other drug is not available everywhere in the world? Do you not realize that, in other cultures than US/European, natural and tribal rituals are as real, believed, and practiced as Christianity is in "western" culture?
It seems this board is full of self-righteous, ignorant, narrow minded, arrogant twerps. Some have saved me from believing that completely. Please add to my confidence in the scubaboard community...

Any time a preachy post begins with "you people" it makes me wonder..... The OPs intent for this thread was to draw attention to "restaurants" that are capitalizing on the usually illegal practice of trading in Shark Fin or other less than savory exploitation of sharks.. It was not an attack on poor, down trodden, poverty stricken individuals following tribal rituals or feeding themselves with shark meat..

I think your defense of those cultural groups is misplaced here...

Appreciate your service :)

Cheers,
Roger

Alright, I apologize for the name calling...was having a bad night. Won't turn this into a defense but to retort a little, I'm aware that most Asian ancestral "medicines" don't work. Was just pointing out that many people strongly believe in them. I certainly don't support the harvesting of endangered species to give rich folks a fancy meal. I am fascinated with and highly respectful of our natural world. Please don't mail me those anthrax envelopes you prepared last night.

Ah, but bird's nests are harvested in a sustainable way, and might actually create incentives to maintain habitat.
I withdraw this statement. After a little research I believe that while it can be harvested in a sustainable way, on balance it is not.

Where are those shark fins orginated from?
I am pretty sure none of them were caught by our local fishermen. Some of them just go to Coron and collected the live fish while the others go to Indonesia and Thailand and do the same. The remaining few just catch what is left over.

There should be total ban on shark finning.
Supply and demand and they go hand in hand together.

I have seen baby sharks on sell by the National Highway close to Baloy Beach(Subic) last yr. The sharks might be caught by mistake but the fisherman surely did not release them. I just wonder who eventually bought them, Chinese or Pinoy? Who ever they were, the fisherman is more than likely a local.

.

Rather a ban on shark fishing altogether... At the slow rate sharks reproduce, it will take 50+ years for populations to show the slightest comeback...
