Ive been sifting through posts on the board looking for reviews of Scuba Junkies in Semporna. Although I am seeing a lot of general impressions, I havent read any direct reviews of their service or anecdotes about the operation.

So, lets have it then!
Anyone have experiences - positive or negative, with Scuba Junkie?

Bloody annoying when a group of them dropped down on top of me when I was taking photos a couple of days ago :shakehead: messed up the viz (which wasn't brilliant to start with) as they were kicking up sand like there was no tomorrow

Other than that, I don't know anything about them!

I dove with them 2y ago and really loved it. Nice guys, good prices, skilled teachers, wicked fries with hot curry on the corner(..) I am not too experienced so dont take my answer for granted..

Only thing is I mailed them 10 days ago cause I am considering doing my DM there but they havent replied yet..

Could you let me know if they are still alive and kicking? Thread about sepedan worries me though..

Dove with Scuba Junkies last summer.

The dive masters were good 1:4 ratio. It was a really hectic shop with lots of traffic & the gear was pretty sketchy. But, the prices were great.

It was hard to get a Sipidan permit then, now, given the new permiting system I don't know. Just make sure to make reservations with SJ ahead of time. SJ has a shuttle van that can pick you up from the airport.

If you're a budget backpacker, you can slum it in Semporna in the 12 person dorms above the loud air compressor that runs till late for $3 per night including a very basic breakfast. Private rooms w/bath were $18 last year. The bar is fun at night! Lots of young people. I think 3 dives a day cost US$90 & include a very basic lunch.

Alternatively SJ has an island homestay in a traditional village on Mabul Island. I think basic rooms w/showers (not sure if there is hot water?) are $18 per night. Scuba Junkies picks you up in the morning, saving you the long boat ride from semporna. I'd opt for this if I went back.

When I was there, the staff was overworked but well trained.
If you have your own gear & partner you should be ok.
If you use their gear & collect an insta-buddy - I'd suggest that you go early for gear fitting & select newer gear, test everything 4X's & stay really close to your partner & the pack!
If you have more questions feel free to PM me

Thanks Kathydee & Sonar! We are also considering diving with Scuba Junkies for our early May trip & have been undecided due to the lack of info/ reports abt them. Guess we will book in early March when bk fr Bali trip. We are planning to stay at their new Mabul accom!

Bring your own equipment if you want to dive at Scuba Junkie.

I was diving with them before, had a great time, no complaints - but the gear thing is a major issue. I have never seen a shop rent out stuff that bad...

The people were cool, and diving was cheap - probably to cheap for them to afford equipment maintance.

I had my own stuff - thus noi complaints, but I was a little nervous after doing a safety check with my buddy....

Thanks, adamtodd. We have our own stuff too...
