The best benefit of the Mileage cards are free bag checks and keeping your mileage "active" if you don't fly much anymore. American for example your miles expire if you have 18 months of no activity.
The American card is $85/year. They will waive it if you ask them. (or they did for me. or gave me in "in lieu of" credit to offset it).
Delta card I forget the fee per year. $85 maybe? Anyway, they waive my fee for it also. Just ask them to do it.
