Scuba diver's body found in Tank Cave

POLICE have found the body of a scuba diver reported missing in Tank Cave, near Mt Gambier.

Police initially received report at 3.45pm today that the Victorian man, 40, was missing at the popular diving spot in the state's South East after he failed to surface.

His body was found a short time later.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner.

It is the second death in Tank Cave this year. In February, experienced Polish diver Agnes Milowka, died when she became stuck in the complex subterranean structure and ran out of air.

It took divers three days to retrieve her body which was found 500m from the cave's entrance.

The 29-year-old had worked as a stunt diver for James Cameron's blockbuster Sanctum 3D.

Tank Cave is considered one of the best diving diving destinations in the southern hemisphere by the Cave Divers Association and is the most extensive underwater cave system in Australia and the sixth in the world.

The maze like cave extends for at least 7km underground.

Creepy people re stirring the silt

Not that you can ever trust a news story (especially not the herald sun ) but this sounds like it might be a "death while diving" rather than a diving accident per se

The same newspaper is now quoting a diver, said to be part of the retrievel team, as saying the deceased "ran out of air"; also now sounds like he may have been exiting after completing the dive, rather than on the way in as previous newspaper reports seemed to suggest:

"CDAA national director John Vanderleest said... Where he was planning on diving, he went through that as planned. It was a very controlled exit from the cave"

Typically sensationalist headline from this crappy paper:
