Hey Alex,

Besides the above ideas you can also check the Mask, Fin & Snorkel section here on Scubaboard at http://www.scubaboard.com/forumdisplay.php?f=31

Plus if you have specific gear you are considering, you can ask for comments there about that gear from folks who have used it and will be happy to offer their opinions...

I started my gear search at http://www.scubadiving.com by reading every gear review I could find. And while they were helpful, the reviews were all very limited. Then I discovered Scubaboard! While there are not necessarily any charts and reviews like other sites, you will find more comprehensive real world tests on a wide variety of equipment around here than most anywhere else.

HI Alex,

As Kidspot suggests you need to dig in, there are some reviews that have tecnhical information but they are usually filtered groups of products. By this I mean "this years new", " the lightest", premium or low cost. Nobody for instance can review every BCD in a common feature.

The gear forums are a uge resource along with the Basic and New Divers forums. Also keep an eye on yur regional foum for stuff popular and suited to your local diving. Becoming gear savy is probably more work than earning your openwater card!

Hey Don, while you're at it, I could use a larger SD card for my digital camera.

Sorry for the hijack... I will also toss in my vote for using this board (in the specific equipment sections below) to get some ideas. Keep in mind, however, that opinions are just that. It is always best (if you can) to try out some gear before hand or visit a local dive shop to inspect some of the stuff up close before you drop a lot of cash.
