Bill to End Ocean Sewage Dumping in South Florida Unanimously Passes in Tallahassee ***

The bill, which now awaits the signature of Governor Crist, requires the ocean outfalls to achieve Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) standards by 2018, this will in effect reduce the nutrient discharges to our reefs by about 90%. Final closure of the sewer pipes must be completed by 2025. The Delray Beach ocean sewage outfall that Reef Rescue first focused public attention on in 2003 is well ahead of the outfall legislation timeframe and is expected to eliminate the need for their ocean pipe within a year. Boca Raton has been upgrading their reuse facility and should also eliminate their pipe well ahead of the time requirements.

We thank all of you who sent emails to the Governor, Senate, House and FDEP, the other environmental groups who joined us in Tallahassee, and special thanks to Paul Johnson, President of Reef Relief, who lobbied in Tallahassee for the bill and kept us informed of daily developments.
