I am considering my first speargun and wanted to know the pros and cons between the two before I make a call. Also, what are the quality brands? Thanks in advance.

I got both, but prefer pneumatic, faster to load and i dont need very long range

I'm with bumcikaz, since the viz hear is mostly less than the range of the pneumatic, they work quite well for me. If I was shooting in clear water for bigger fish, a large band gun would make more sense.

I may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.

I have a 48" Biller and a Riffe 39". I prefer the bands over the pneumatic because the viz is good where I hunt and I need the distance. Also for me the pneumatics can be loud and spook other fish.

Pneumatic are "louder" so they spook fish. They are more prone to failure and their failure requires sending them to a pneumatic gun repair center when band guns don't require a specialist's serving when they have a problem (pneumatics aren't sand friendly if you drop them on a sandy beach). Reportedly the pneumatics lose power as you go deeper due to increased ambient pressure.

We use both. Ill alternate between bands and pneumatic throughout the day. Usually my son is in the water and I am running the boat. He'll pass me a fish and I'll pass him a loaded gun.

I prefer bandguns. I've used both. Actually first gun I've used was a pneumatic. Since then it's been all bands. Bandguns are mechanically much simpler, and are more widespread for a reason. Much easier to adjust power, both up and down. A buddy of mine recently recovered from shoulder surgery. Until recently, he couldn't load a standard speagun. He solved that by getting thinner diameter bands until his strength was back. The reverse is more often the case. I normally hunt with a single band, but have a second on the gun if needed.

But, it's largely regional. Go to the dive shops in your area, and see what they have. That will give you a pretty good idea of what the shooters in your area are using. In my area pneumatics are rare.

Look for good videos of people spearfishing using both. You'll see some of advantages or disadvantages.

I dive around where you live and it is 99+% band.
I hunt commercially,it is 100% band.
I have a few friends with WRs both SCUBA and freediving 100% band
I cannot for any reason see any advantage to me using a pneumatic.
