I put together a small slide show of a dive at Tunnels Beach in Kauai. This was my first experience with underwater photography. As was to be expected for a first attempt, I had my best results when I was shallow enough to turn off the strobes and use natural light. I've got nothing but respect for those of you who are able to consistently get good results while shooting with dual strobes in manual mode. Anyway, I'm hooked. Can't wait to get more experience. I don't think I can imagine diving with out a camera on any future dives.

Fantastic shots for your first U/W photo shoot!

What camera are you using?

Tunnels Beach Slide Show

Thanks for sharing your first UW photos. They look great. It is more meaningful to me, as that is where ( tunnel beach ) we were there on our on our honeymoon, snorkeling.
Kauai is the only island we've been to so far, so it is our favorite. Hope to see'm all, above and below.

It was actually my first time to Hawaii. Kauai is a beautiful island. I did take quite a few above water shots if you're interested. Feel free to check out some of those here...

I'm using a Nikon D100 in a Light and Motion housing. I sort of broke the bank on the housing so I only have one strobe right now. A Sea and Sea YS-90DX. Some of the bad shots that I didn't include in that slide show included a fair amount of backscatter. My Sea and Sea strobe came with a plastic diffuser that goes over the front of the strobe. Do those really work to diffuse some of the backscatter? For some reason I never tried it.

Not bad at all for a first timer. Good compositional eye on the tunnel shots.

As for strobe work.
Remember that the light comes out of a strobe in a cone shape. To avoid backscatter, you must aim your strobes beyond your subject. If you aim them straight at it you will light up particluate in front of subject creating backscatter.
Have a look around the Tips and Techniques section for a strobe positioning thread by Chris Bangs.

Good work

We were supoosed to dive at Tunnels the week before but the current too strong for our OWcert dives. We opted for a boat dive for our first after Cert dive, but after snorkling Tunnels, I wish we had dove there. Our visit was from 9/5 to 9/19 and on the 18th we snorkled there again. I didn't bring my camera out and of course we came upon 4 turtles at once, including one who came right up to us many times. We also saw a nice 3ft Zebra Moray, out of his hole. Next time on Kauai we will dive Tunnels for sure. Which operator did you use? Nice shots!

Very good. I particularly like the one of the diver going through the crevice. Although, shoot, they are all good.
