We have dived all over the world and normally prefer tropical water temperatures but now we are excited about living close to the 'best subtropical diving in the world' at the Poor Knights near Whangarei in Northland, New Zealand. It's a different experience with totally different fish and landscape, we have a lot to learn again.

- the colder water is ok with a 5mm suit
- visibility is often great and the blue of the ocean is amazing
- thousands of fish, big schools are guaranteed (maomao, trevally, demoiselles)
- lots of nudibranchs, anemones, sponges, fans, kelp, even coral
- great rock formations, caves, arches with good light effects
- marine reserve with a good feeling, a special place to dive
- the islands are tapu for the maori because of a violent history and are home to many endangered land species
- thrill: anything is possible! we heard of manta, sunfish, hammerheads, orca, big rays, turtles, strange local fish (john dory, lord howe coralfish, boarfish, cute puffers) etc.

There's a snorkel video on our website, a diving one will follow. We run a B&B in Whangarei with a dive shuttle coming to our house. Whangarei also has some of New Zealand's best beaches and bush tracks. You can also snorkel in the mangroves.

So when you come to New Zealand, don't forget the diving! There are loads of other great places and loads of wrecks, volcanic White Island etc...... There's a special forum about New Zealand here in scubaboard for more info.
