I have never been to Tobago and it looks like quite a hassle to get there from Detroit.

I'd like to hear from experienced divers who have been to Tobago just how it stacks up against other great Caribbean dive locations (Caymans, Bonaire, Cozumel, etc.) How's the vis in mid-April? Can you see big pelagics there?

Also, if you have any tips on where to stay and how best to get there that would be really helpful. Thanks!

Barry

P.S. Did you feel safe when you were there?

Tobago is one of the best dive destinations in the Caribbean. Many different sites for all levels. Shore diving, wrecks, drifts, lots of fish (even pelagics) and corals, all can be experienced in Tobago. Accommodation, food and transportation is much cheaper than other parts of the Caribbean. Check out Tobago Accommodation: the myTobago hotel & holiday accommodation guide for recommendations and reviews on accommodation. Safety should not be a big concern once you're careful.

There are direct flights to Trinidad from New York, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale and Houston with Caribbean Airlines, American or United. Tobago is just a 15 minute flight from Trinidad which costs about $50.

Viz should be good in April.

Hope this helps.

Can you please give more details on shore diving?

There is some good shore diving at Store Bay and Mt. Irvine - max. depth of 40 ft. with lots of fish and coral. However most operators don't offer shore diving. When are you planning on visiting? I can probably arrange some shore diving for you.
