Pool Certification

Both NAUI and PADI have recently announced a new certification level of "Pool Diver". Although not a full scuba certification, pool divers will be able to enjoy scuba diving within the confines of a swimming pool. There will actually be two certification levels - Pool Diver and the Deep Pool Diver. The former will be restricted to the shallow end whereas Deep Pool Divers will be permitted to explore the deep end as well.

The course will consist of a rigorous 32-minute class-room session followed by a thorough 19 minutes of in-water training. Although NAUI will only allow this course to be undertaken in a pool environment, PADI has included a home study option with a CD-ROM for the theory component and provision to undertake the in-water training in a bathtub or other pool like environment.

NAUI and PADI have both announced plans to develop Nitrox Pool Diver and Tri-Mix Technical Pool Diver programs, for those who want the safely extend their underwater pool time, including an extended exploration of the deep end.

I am going to assume that for whatever reason you think that you are providing a service to the dive community by posting this.

Found this on the PADI website (NAUI must still be figuring out the conversions):

Why PADI Metric Diver?

Through the PADI Metric Diver Specialty course, you can learn the techniques and procedures for diving using metric instruments. Many countries outside of the US use the metric system of measurements, so if you're versed in the use of metric gauges and computers, the more countries you can dive in.

What do I need to start?

PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification (or qualifying certification from another organization)
Minimum age: 10 years old

What will I do?

As part of your PADI Metric Diver Specialty course, you'll learn about:

Metric diving planning, organization, procedures, techniques, problems and hazards
Proper Metric diving etiquette, including metric equipment storage and conduct
Common Metric terminology, such as meters and bar. Includes foreign spellings you may encounter such as "metres"
Specific and local Metric diving laws and ordinances
Overview of emergency and safety equipment needed to dive Metric

How long will it take?

Recommended Course Hours: 12
Minimum Open Water Training: two dives over one day
Where can I go from here?

The Metric Adventure Dive from the Adventures In Diving program may credit toward this Specialty course at the instructor's discretion. This Specialty course can also be one of the five Specialty certifications necessary for your PADI Master Scuba Diver certification.

If Metric diving sounds like the key to your next adventure, get in touch with your PADI Dive Center or Resort for more information.

What's the point of being able to dive in a pool and nowhere else. Is it for the rich so they show their kids before investing the money for the real classes. I maybe reaching on the last statement but can someone clarify what the point is...

Thanks for the replies in advance or the flames which ever it may be.

Where can I get some pool-life identification slates?

It would be really lame to go to all the trouble to get certified and then not be able to properly identify such wonders as the Yellow Striped Bikini fish!

Also could be helpfull in early identification and avoidance of such dangers as the "Spedo-cuda" as well.

That's just plain funny. It was just ok till the bathtub or other pool-like enviro line, then I couldn't help but laugh.
