I dont smoke and absoutely hate anyone doing it near me BUT i have found that smoking doesnt neccesarily mean bad air consumption. I know of someone that smokes 30+ per day every day and yet has air consumption far better than others on the boat. The opposite is someone whos a very fit active sportsman who can empty a 15 litre tank in 25 mins at shallow depths.
2 people i know who have buddied and dived with each other for over 25 years. One of them a tank will last an hour, his buddy on same dive 25 mins so even people with the same experience vary hugely.
Nerves play a part but even then as the above case shows its not the be-all and end-all.

First smoking and diving is just plain stupid, while smoking does affect your lungs, that is not the main problem. When you smoke you are sucking in lots of carbon monoxide, now this carbon monoxide attaches it’s self to the hemoglobin in your blood about 200x more readily than O2 or carbon dioxide does. The next problem is once it’s there it stays attached to it for 8 to 12 hours. Now if you know how your body works you would realize the hemoglobin is the carrier in your body to get O2 to it, and take carbon dioxide from it this means there is a lot less hemoglobin free to do its job! The next thing you need to remember is that a build up of carbon dioxide while diving is not a good thing and the deeper you go the worse it gets. So I don’t care what smokers try and say they are at a much greater risk and use more air than they would if they did not smoke.

What are the effects of nicotene?

I don't think you need to own equipment before taking AOW. I didn't. It was taking AOW that made me realize I liked diving enough to go out and buy equipment.

True, but I bet if he did not smoke he would do even better on air.

Impossible to say, his air consumption is already one of the best ive ever seen so it may help it may not. I dont think theres a direct simple correlation between smoking and air consumption.

rofl,,
i will match anyone here on air consumption. $1000 says you will be the asd
(air sucking dog) who comes up first. i will leave any further remarks from the above post alone about smoking after saying i realize humans are naturally prejidous and easily mis led by the media. your health, abilties and intelegence has nothing with what my personal habits so leave smoking out of this.

good or bad diving habits are a result of experience and familiarity with your equipment and their interaction with the open water. that is the difference in divers.

sounds to me this was a fairly novice and new diver. he was probably sucking air because he was seeing his first fish up close. remember when you first started diving how exciting and thrilling it was. i remember it as being awesome and is every time still.
lots of other reasons for being a asd current health, weight, familarity, etc.

i think it is great you are taking advanced classes and just as great the other guy was too. the more you dive the better and safer it gets. maybe you should ask for a private class or at least closer attention next time.

Smoking does have effect on the lungs which effects breathing.
This statement is correct, but not in the way people seem to be taking it.
Smoking does NOT change the rate at which one breaths. Smoking changes the efficeincy (sp) that air is absorbed by the lungs.
It doesn't matter if a person smokes or not if all you're looking at is their rate of air consumption.
As a matter of fact, I dove with a smoker yesterday who had about the same consumption rate as me, and I'm not an asd. (I'd also be happy to dive with him again.)

I know that when I dive, I want my dive partner to have similar gas management and bouancy skills as myself. It just seems that if you smoke, you will need to breath harder (just a generalization, I realize). If you breath harder, you use more gas...which makes for a possibly hazardous situation for myself.

Hey HTN, that eel almost got you last weekend (grin),

BGE

If you are dumb enough to smoke you deserve the consequences.

And how bright is it to post on a thread that is a couple years old? :D
