It was very informative. The instructors were very nice and made everyone feel comfy. The price was OUTRAGEOUS - $550.00. The gear that was given to us was old and less than FULLY functional. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure it would pass inspection! 8 people in the class and 5 of our BC's were leaking from various spots. The 1st class, I spoke up and said my bc was leaking. 4 other people followed suit. The instructor said it was nothing and it wouldn't effect me, but they would fix it. 2nd class, still leaking - I tolerated it. 3rd class, still leaking and I let them know I wasn't happy. Others followed suit but were shut down with "your bc's are fine." They swapped mine out for a new air2. 4th class I have my old air2 back on and guess what? Still leaking, but they "tagged it this time, so it will get fixed for sure".

Now were at a remote location for our open water dives....old bc, old air2 and same old leak. SO, they give me a different bc that looked like it was possibly the first bc ever invented....and it was too big. I decided to just deal with it because I knew I could manage.

Now before I even signed up for the class, I asked if I could use my own equipment. It was all literally brand new and I had EVERYTHING. I was quickly shut down with a "not unless you bought it here" comment. Fact is, I'll probably never buy anything there. All there gear is about twice the price of what mine cost from a reputable, AUTHORIZED retailer online. And they won't even consider budging on the price. They actually snicker and act as if your joking.

Of course I will have tanks filled there and possibly service, but you have got to be freakin kidding me. $550 for class and rental of faulty gear!! Equipment marked up 100%!!!! UNBELIEVABLE

------OH and not to mention, there were a few people in the class that shouldn't be allowed near an unattended glass of water that passed.

Rental gear is usually quite worn and has a very used look to it. In the end, if the gear fits you reasonably well, you may not be pretty, but you'll be fine. BUT, if the life-sustaining gear isn't working correctly or needs obvious servicing, don't let anyone convince you to use it.

"not unless you bought it here"

i seriously dont get your dive industry over there....... but lesson learnt, now get out there and go diving, locate other stores to frequent and enjoy

cheers

It's a liability thing............not letting students use there own gear. The only way they know that it is actually new and/or recently serviced is if you got it from them.

Of course the shop you're talking about doesn't sound like they're to worried about liability :shakehead

Yes, and perceived "leaks" are often highly over rated.

I occasionaly use a Sherwood Oasis that emits a disturbing (for some) string of ZZZZZiiizzzzzzzzzziiiiinnnnnnggggggg bubbles that looks quite alarming. This amounts to a dive where about 2 cubic feet of air are being lost for this peculiar and intentional system. Fellow divers just go bonkers.

My advice? Calm down a bit, log a few hundred dives, then decide what is dangerous and unacceptable versus just what looks icky and bubbles a bit. I have never used any rental gear that was inherently dangerous.

I like your glass of water analogy, but then again- aint nobody walking out of any certification course who isnt much more than a walking disaster. It takes time, no matter who the instructor was, no matter how new the gear.

now I'm curious... was it a shop in the city? PM me if you don't feel comfortable posting

Please let me know also ..I formerly taught at a location in the Bronx and recently have gone a mix of independent and teaching for a facility in Yonkers. Can pm me if uncomfortable on posting.
The price they charged you sounds high if it was only classroom and pool work. Was it a private class? I charge $300 for ow course-and include a crew pack. The open water training dives are done off a boat in LI Sound and I charge a total of $150. for the 4 dives done over 2 days. Class is always small and very personable. Maybe you are including rental equipment in that $550. fee you were charged? Then it seems very reasonable.Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

New York area
Wow! Only $550 in New York? How do the instructors pay the rent and put groceries on the table at that piddly rate? To say nothing of taking care of a pool for your use, and a classroom. Just heard today that a one bedroom flat in New York was over $2K/month! I can't imagine how much retail space must be...
That $550 is amazing. You got a great deal!
