Just to add to the OP's question. In my situation I can not buy my own tanks as I must rely on public transportation and many places in these parts only have 10litre tanks. 10 is pretty darn small!! (about 2000 litres / 70 cu ft of air) renting a larger tank is not often possible.

So would it be acceptable to use a small pony as a stage, include the pony air in my gas planning, and have slightly more bottom time? plus, as is the OP, I'm always the first to use up my air and my buddys don't get as much dive time as they would otherwise...

Hey as long as hes using it early int he dive while he has the majority or all of his primary tank left I don't see the issue. (I agree that it shouldnt be used after the main tank is depleted, except in emergencies). But if you are using it earlier in the dive and not using it as a crutch I don't see an issue,
its like people who share are at the beginning of a dive to make up for the air hog, as long as both people are not depleting their air supply to unsafe levels there is no real issue here

Why not rent 2 tanks? Put one on your back and sling the other one. When one tank gets down to half full switch regs.
Dont breathe one empty before switching,it would be embarrasing to have one empty tank and one that does not work for some reason :D

I don't use my pony for anything but an emergency. However since the OP is diving with a buddy when he uses it, he has some redundancy. I agree with the suggestion of a larger tank. I greatly prefer an HP120 and 19 cu ft when I dive, but I dive solo myself.

Thanks for all the advice and yes i would love doubles but unfotunatley i've spent my money on a high priced rental pro (Scuba Pro) jacket . I was diving at Edmonds Underwater Park this weekend. The deepest was 30fsw. My GF was dissapointed but I didn't use my pony because of the depth . I got 48 minutes out of my 80 cu/ft at that depth After all the advice think I will start saving for a 120 cu/ft and only use the pony on my deeper dives 60fsw or more and fill it with 32-36-40% Eanx for my deco stop.i figure it wouldn't hurt . i like the thought of having the insurance though when diving deeper. Thanks again for the advice I love this forum and am a more informed diver because of it.

IMHO if you are going to use a pony then make sure your main cylinder and pony are one and the same gas - this would prevent you from breathing the wrong gas at an inappropriate depth.

Consider further training if you are doing deco with different gases. If someone were to ask you how long you can stay at depth on your cylinder (with your pony) could you answer the question?

Since I am only a rec diver I am only certified to 130fsw and in the event that I am using my 19cf pony I would be ascending i mispoke when I said Deco stop, so replace deco with safety, my bad.Is there a problem with breathing even 40% oxygen at 15 fsw for 8-15 minutes given this is not a repetitive eANX dive?

With respect, the internet is probably not the best place to learn this stuff.

Keep it simple.Put air in your pony.
