You need to make a 1 part to 10 of a 3% peroxide solution (3% off the shelf at wal,at etc) with distilled water, a pich of salt and a pinch of baking soda. Probably no less than a cups worth.
Microwave it for 15 secs or so to warm it. Make it as sterile as possible.

If its too strong the irritation will force the sinuses closed making you mor likely to get an infection.

I agree that a neti pot (or similar other nasal/sinus washing system) is a great think. I have been using it for several a while with great results! I was even able to clear one of my sinus infections with out having to use antibiotics (I caught it early).

One other thing folks don't think about is that you can easily get sinus infections if you don't have good oral hygeine...yep that means brushing and flossing.

I've tried some homemade versions of the neti pot- my version of the nose bong. It works OK for me, but I dont feel addicted to it like some people seem to get. I usually only use it as an option of last resort- when I can feel the junk in my sinuses and rinsing with saline couldn't make anything worse.

I also tried all three phases 1) passing saline from one nostril to the other 2) passing saline from nose to mouth and 3) passing saline from mouth to nose, which is like a slow form of drowning.

Been there and done the surgery. Still flush from time to time when i feel a bit stuffy.

BTW, didn't heave blood out of my stomach after surgery. I never did throw up.

Dang I'm glad I've been lucky enough to avoid sinus infections or allergies! This sounds like a friggin terrible thing to do to your self!

Glad it works and keeps you in the water though... :)

Once you get use to it, it isn't that bad. Not something that I really look forward to but it helps. Just the price that you have to pay once in awhile.

I'm not sure what the peroxide brings to the party. Saline (in the right mix) is natural to the body, and the desired effect of the Neti pot is to lubricate the sinus area and wash out contaminates. I think I'll stick to the salt water.

Well, my hubby started using the NeilMed Sinus Rinse and LOVES it! It was recommended on the scubadiving mag website for ear clearing issues. He bought it at Walgreens in the nasal/sinus section. It comes with some powder that you mix in the water and then you lean forward and squirt it up one nostril and it drains out the other. Be careful about making the water too hot...that could really hurt. I just used it today for the first time and I am amazed at how easy it is to breathe.

You can also google reviews on the NeilMed Sinus Rinse and non-scuba people love it, as well.

All the reviews seem to come from people eager to sell the stuff. Has anyone seen a real review from a disinterested party? Has anyone published anything on this? I'd like to try it but first want to see some data about the efficacy of the product. It sounds quite benign - that's not my concern. I'm more interested in whether this really works. No anecdotes please...

I use NeilMed sinus rinse too. I haven't even had a cold since I started using it.

Another NeilMed user. Had sinus surgery 4 years back and the ENT recommended a daily rinse with salt water/baking soda.

What other product can clear your sinuses and give you the sensation of drowning in the comfort of your own home?
