On my last trip south a pal-o-mine came along. He's a weed-head to say the least. This dude was firing up in the parking lot at the airport, in the rental car on the way to the motel and his room smelled like a pot house. We dove like three dives a day and he was smoking in the mornings before the dives and at night. Not being a smoker or drinker myself, I just wondered how this would affect a person's ability to reason in case of an emergency and if it would affect one's lung capacity. I noticed that he used a lot of air on these dives. Anyone have any experience with this?:dork2:

Well in my experience, your ability to reason definetly gets hampered, no question about it. I can only assume it would also negatively effect your SAC as well.

So, you were diving with a buddy who was high? That's really not a good idea. Pot certainly isn't as dangerous as some would lead you to believe, but it does affect you judgment.

Why would you want to dive high anyway? Your Twinkies would get all soggy. :D

Everyone has their own opinions on the effect of marijuana. Personally I believe it alters the thinking process so diving with him would be a NO-GO for me, same as if he was drinking on the way to the dive. As far as SAC, I think any kind of smoke inhalation affects the lungs ability to absorb 02, hence the SAC goes up.

Thats why the smart tech divers use hash.

Here is another thought:

I had a friend that smoked quite a bit. He was in anothers friends car and a LEO pulled him over for a minor traffic violation. The LEO arrested both of them on drug charges. The friend that was driving the car (owned the car) wasnt smoking, but he almost lost his car because there were drugs in his car.

Dangerous to say the least.

I'd (i) not dive with him and (ii) inform police.

Smoking pre dive isnt good for you with CO build up etc. Smoking drugs that slow reflexes, reactions and so on is lunacy pre dive.

You're going to rat out your friend to the police for smoking pot?

I don't know about where you live, but where I live the police would laugh at you.

I do agree that getting high and diving isn't so bright. If I was with this guy, I would consider myself solo as far as my own safety, and I would keep a close eye on his gauges. Maybe I'm a bit reckless, but I would probably dive with him if it was easy tropical diving. I know a lot of pot heads, and they are high so often, that they probably function more normally high than sober.
