A diver is missing after a dive on the wreck of the Cape Breton today. A husband and wife were doing a penetration dive on the Cape when apparently they found themselves in a dead end compartment. The husband was leading the dive and was wearing doubles turned the dive but somehow visability was reduced to zero. The wife (on single tank) felt her way out of the wreck reportedly exiting through a ventilation shaft but her husband did not make it out. There was no guideline used. An attempt was made by the boat operator and another diver on board to find him and reported no bubbles rising from the wreck which is common even when divers are deep inside to see some bubbles. At this time he has not been found after Coast Guard dive team conducted search. RCMP will resume search in the morning. The diver was a friend of mine and the last time I dove with him was on this wreck. He was an experienced diver and instructor.

Words cannot explain...

He will be missed dearly. A very happy, fun, posetive person who loved to dive. My condolences go out to his familly and loved ones.

May he rest in peace.

condolences to the family and friends of Daniel.

We must all remember that Murphy is out there and waiting, and he is not your friend.

Public safety dive teams must follow protocol, and protocol is made up with the lowest denominator in mind. I am a member of my local PSD team, was training officer even, and even our team, that had a few excellent divers on it, still had to follow the rules, and the rules were written to the weakest team member.

Its nuts that they wont let you go look Dave, there isnt anyone that knows that wreck better than you.

The Vancouver Island news A channel announced that Daniel Harrington was the diver still missing on the wreck of the Cape Breton where he was diving with his girlfriend. RCMP divers are expected to call off the search some time tomorrow.

Daniel taught me rescue a year ago. He was a great guy and teacher; such that if I was thinking about taking another course and was undecided, if he was teaching it, that would be enough to convince me to take it.

Oh man.....

Bill.

Dear Scuba Board,

I would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts. It is a terrible time for all of us who were fortunate enough to know him.

I would also, specifically like to thank Dave. Its been very difficult to read this thread, but knowing you're there to answer questions.. well I couldn't ask for more. Daniel thought the world of you. I have heard story after story of your diving adventures; not one of which passing without Daniel's eyes lighting up and his laugh overtaking his speach (i'm sure you'll know exactly what I mean.)

Daniel loved to live life more than anything else in the world. He wanted to do anything that other people couldn't. Daniel had often said that he didn't want to know when his time was up. He wanted to go 'quick and fast'. I would always argue that people would want to say goodbye, but Daniel would have none of it. Being Daniel, he would never believe so many people even knew his name. He was always one to underestimate how much he was cherished but at least he was able to live and die the way he wanted.

My time with him has been the happiest I've ever known. Full of weekend getaways, dive trips and lots of couch time to dream up new adventures. I cannot fathom moving on, but I know one day I'll have to. So will all of us. I know when that time comes Daniel would simply want to be remembered in our heart. I am lucky though, Daniel loved me so much maybe it'll be enough to last my lifetime. Everywhere I turn I'm faced with a memory of him that makes me smile. He permeated my life, and I am so greatful for that.

For everyone else, I hope you too can remember the good times you've had with him. Please stop questioning his actions. Daniel was the best diver I've ever known, and one day I will share my last moments with him. There is a lot to what is being said that is wrong, and even more that is missing.

His loving girlfriend,
Candace

Candace,
I've expressed my condolences to Dave (as the original info. poster) and Daniel's friend.
Please accept my condolences to you. I'm glad that you two had such good times together
and will have many good memories to fall back on when the shock and numbness diminishes
over time...
Of course anyone diving would like to know the true facts from the people involved in order to best protect themselves but you have other things to deal with for now.
I am signed up to dive the Breton and Sask. this coming weekend. (No penetration) and
will think of you and Daniel when I'm there.
Take care.

Hi Candace,

I'm so sorry to hear of you loss. I only had the opportunity to meet Daniel a few times, but since he was one of those guys you instantly like, his loss is sharply felt. It is so hard to imagine that someone so full of the joy of life is actually gone. That huge laugh gone forever is incredibly hard to believe. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and his family. If you are comfortable, please let us know if and/or when a service is being held so we can pay our respects in person. I really hope his friends are able to go down and find him and you and his loved ones can have at least that much closure.

Candace, I can't imagine the pain you are feeling right now. It is hard for me to think of the right words to say but know we are feeling some of your grief with you and his passing will leave an empty place in many of us.
Thank you for posting here. I do hope when you feel ready to share some of your experience of that fateful dive you give those of us who choose to share this passion for scuba diving a glimpse at what we all face and maybe a chance to learn from it.
Dive safe Candace and Godspeed Daniel.

Descent

Oh, I have shrugged off the noise and calamity of modern day
and floated through the depths on bubble-glistening fins.
Downward I have drifted and joined the ebb and flow of wind-driven currents,
and done a thousand things you would never have dreamed of.
Dipping and swooping deep in the limpid pools of silent seas,
Floating…. Drifting….
I've chased shimmering schools of fish,
laughed through coral-carpeted canyons,
and eased my rubber-covered body through the floorless oceans of blue.
Deeper and deeper into the bone-chilling depths
I've descended to the sand covered bottom of the universe,
with peaceful reserve, where sunshine nor rain have ever danced.
And…. While with silent questioning mind,
I've slipped through the blue un-trespassed serenity of the heavenly sea,
Raised up my face
and felt the cool embrace of God

My condolences to all those left behind.

Dive Safe,
