My gosh, anyone with 500+ dives has got to know something about diving... 5000? Give me a break, anything over about 1000 and I'd say you have my attention when handing out advice or help.

You are so correct!

Now tell us about your self; your accomplishments, your contributions, your longivity in the sport...Don't be bashful!

sdm
Certainly.

I've been diving for not quite 3 years and have just under 200 dives. My "accomplishments" and "contributions" are for myself -- I don't see any reason to tout anything I do. I have nothing to prove; not because I haven't 'done anything' but because I don't dive to impress people. See, I don't have a huge ego that consistently needs to be fed. I leave what little amount of ego I have on the shore. Have I ever had an ego while diving? Yes -- and it was immediately shot down by my buddies, who I am thankful for.

You've been diving since the beginning (for which I have a great deal of respect) and apparently have quite an extensive knowledge of the history of diving -- a great thing to share. There's nothing I love more than 'sitting at the feet of the master' and listening from the voice of experience.

However...
I've been hanging around here for awhile and noticed that you seem to enjoy bombarding everyone with a big list of your (or at least in this case, apparently your son's) accomplishments. "Look at me, I'm so great!"

If you think you'll impress people talking about how long you've been diving, how many dives you have, how accomplished your son is, etc...you're quite mistaken. To be blunt, I couldn't care less. The accomplishment and contributions are great, but when you run around telling everyone about them, and how great they are...the attitude stinks and immediately turns me off to anything you have to say.

I, for one, am more impressed by people who make the incredible dives, make huge contributions to the overall sport, and then...don't say a word. I'm much more impressed by someone humble rather than an arrogant showoff -- and that applies to everything in life, not just diving.

Yes, I don't dive as much as I like. That's what I get for attending college several hundred miles from the coast. That plus the fact that I'm in school means I don't get as much time to dive as I'd prefer.

Snubbing your nose at someone isn't the way to make friends. Or do they have friends up where you are, on your high horse looking down on all the nobodies?

Since early 1990s SSI has recognized at the DEMA gathering divers who have completed 5000 or more dives in their career.

It would be interesting since there are so many experts on this SCUBA board to learn how many of these experts have have been awarded the SSI PRO 5000?

Don't be bashful --step right up

sdm

Sorry, I'm not SSI, don't bother with DEMA, and only have about 2,000 dives ... guess that doesn't qualify me to know much about diving ...

Is it enough to complete 5000 dives to be awarded the SSI PRO 5000?
Yes. So long as you're vouched for by two Platinum Pro 5000 divers.

BOB! BOB! BOB!

1) You do not need to be SSI --in fact you are probably welcomed more not being SSI.

2) I too, detest DEMA! Only attend on occasion and when I can work in a vacation..

3) 2000 dives is a start but no cigar.

With your background as a veteran NAUI etc diver I am certain that you probably already know the history and reason for the establishment of SSI PRO 5000 recognition, which was initated over a deletion of an advertisement in Skin Diver Magazine. Remember?

sdm

Good for you! Three hard years and 200 dives!

What are you looking for from people Sam?

I think you might be missing the point of this board. Pete or someone can step in and correct me if I'm wrong but, as far as I know, this board is for divers who want to ask questions, share information, experiences, opinions and just chat with other divers. We have everything from those who haven't yet done their first dives to those who are pretty well qualified and experienced.

I must have missed the email informing me that there is a contest going on here.
As I recall I listed my credentials for you after recieving your PM concerning my absence in the "Who's Who of diving". What do you think? Is it ok for me to talk about diving?

Should we have a contest? Come on Sam, if we're going to make this a competition, then lets compete.

Sam, I'm glad your son has done well. We all hope our children do well. My son in a Marine recently back from Iraq and currently training up for his next deployment. My daughter married a nice guy and made me a grandfather. I taught them both to dive.

I'll bet that makes Bob feel Privileged. LOL, the question here is does Bob welcome SSI or give a hoot one way or the other?
2) I too, detest DEMA! Only attend on occasion and when I can work in a vacation..

You detest DEMA but you go? After owning a dive shop, I detest DEMA but I have never gone and I never will go.
3) 2000 dives is a start but no cigar.

Nonsense. You forgot to ask what kind of dives they were. you know? There are dives and then there are dives. Are we counting the weenie stuff?

I don't remember, but it isn't the kind of thing that I would take notice of.

Sam IV is an exemplary human and a outstanding veteran diver who has certainly distinguished him self in his professional life and in his leisure activity of recreational diving.

So Mike what do you think?

I think it sounds like your son has done well and I'm happy for you. I have to tell you though that dropping names like Cronin and Bozanic don't do much for me. Aside from the fact that I'm not a fan of either, I think you should let your sons accomplishments stand on their own. When my son had his LAV blown out from underneath him in Iraq, none of the famous Marines that he's rubbed elbows with were there to help.

What's the point of this thread Sam? To say that your son is well educated and that he's done 300 ft mixed gas dives or to offer some kind of challenge to scubaboard posters? Lots of us have some education and have done 300 ft mixed gas dives. So?
