hey everyone,

I am currently taking my PADI DM with my girlfriend, and we are doing it for ourselves and not to actually work in the dive industry ( no comments on that please ... not my question :no )

Now we have found out that the PADI registration fees are 54 GBP (108 for both of us).
Now my question is: is it necessary for us to pay the fees to be up to the DM level and have the DM Card? Again we dont plan on working in the dive industry.

Also, if we ever decide to work as a DM, Can I just pay the reg fees and then would be registered as an official up to date DM with PADI ?

Thanks.
Jim.

In order for the cert to get processed you do have to pay all necessary fees. In order to stay current you have to pay annual renewal fees. When you come up for your first annual renewal, you could simply opt not to renew, in which case you would no longer recieve the undersea journal, PADIs quarterly training updates or have access to the PADI Pros website. Reactivating a lapsed mebership is not difficult.

If you are doing it for yourself, you don't need the card. Don't pay the extra, don't get the card and you've done it for yourself.

Probably not.

I was under the impression that if you let your DM lapse you would almost have to take the course over, including the waterskills. Isn't that right?

Absolutely not. I have known several instructors who let their memberships lapse and then renewed a few years later. A long lapse might require jumping thru a few hoops, but certainly not retaking the entire course.

That is good news to me. I'm going to dig in my DM material and find out where I got that impression!

PADI Members who do not renew their membership by submitting a Membership
Renewal Application along with membership dues are placed in Inactive
status. An Inactive member cannot represent himself as a PADI Member, teach
PADI courses or certify students as PADI Divers, and does not receive any
membership benefits.
An Inactive member may regain PADI membership by submitting a current
Membership Renewal Application and Membership Agreement and membership
dues. If the member has been inactive for a year or more, he will initially be
renewed in a Nonteaching status. To regain Teaching status, the member must
fulfill retraining requirements specified by the Training and Quality Management
Department based on the length of the membership lapse.

You will be exiled to Patagonia and your first born will be devoured by the PADI monster.

LOL Garrobo! Yes, on page 7 of the DM manual it states what Steve50 replied. I'm going to have to talk to my instructor to find out why I got that impression. I would assume the "retraining requirements" would cost something, probably just a review of the demonstration activites...

IMHO- if the two of you have gone through all the studying, exercises, internships etc and have already paid for the course then why not finish and get the cards? If you do not want to work in a DM capacity right now then all you have to do is show an AOW card and dive for fun. If in the future one or both of you change your minds and do want to start working as a DM then it's all done, without any hoops to jump through.

Just my 2psi
