We are planning to go to AKR the end of October which means the rainy season. Is it always cloudy during the rainy season or is it sunny most of the time except when the storms roll through. Will vis be a problem this time of year?

I understand the angst and desire in your quest, but if you are really asking "how is the rainy season" in Roatan?

It's rainy.

The Bay Islands get their rainy season from being below the Southern edge of the common hurricane track. Spin off bands from these later season storms pinwheel outwards and lash the Northern coast of Roatan with some regularity.

The North side (AKR) will have notably better visibility in those situations (vs the South side) but at the same time the North will have much rougher water (wave & wind). Kind of a trade off.

Is it cloudy? It generally comes in waves, much as those pinwheel cloud & rain fronts of the passing storms go by. Is it sunny except when the storms roll through? Sure- it's also dry when it isn't raining.

Be prepared. this is a great time of year to make certain that you have packed at least one gore-tex uninsulated parka or some sort of rain gear that you can use between dives to keep your body warm.

AKR does single tank dives, three boat runs per day. So if you want to strip down after a dive and get into your windproof rain gear, even if it isn't raining, you'll maintain all that much more body heat. Smart way to go.

October isn't really the rainy season. It starts in earnest Novemeber. I would expect hot humid conditions in October with lots of sun.

Will's got that one on the head.

Curious statistics, however:

2007 Rainy days in October~ 12
2006 Rainy October Days~ 4

Never get too far ahead of yourself planning anything in the Bay Islands.

(read as: I'd still bring the raincoat!)

I've been to Roatan twice in October: 1993 and 2000. And once in November - 2001. All times Coco View resort (South side of island in the middle.

Yes it rains :) But - in my experience this is usually will only during the night (except perhaps a little shower here or there). Days are usually pretty clear in the morning, with clouds making their way overhead as the day goes on. Rain might start at 5:30pm but is more likely to start only much later. Personally, we really liked it at Coco that time of year. It's nice having the rain to sleep by.

I was there end of october 2006 and had sunny, with cloudy periods, every day. It rained every night but was fine during the day!

You have decent chances of getting good weather!:coffee:

Weather is so random anyway...you never know. I thought August was rainy season,.and now I'm hearing that it's not? Other places I've been to in the Caribbean (during the rainy season) hasn't been bad at all. It would rain for a very short period of time, and then the sun came out in no time. Hope it's the same in Roatan.
