I also believe that the (print) magazine and newspaper industry have to be hurting by the internet, especially more since mobile devices are providing more and more web content.

Scuba Diving Magazine has improved greatly since Rodales sold it. I'm sorry to see it combined with the "fluff rag" Sport Diver which does no hard hitting reviews. At least SDM has Scuba Labs and does real tests and trials, even if the opinions are watered down (excuse the pun).

Yes, the magazine and newspaper biz is hurting BAD. You will see many mags, newspapers, and printers go out of business over the next year.

I agree 100%, Willar, and print publications with web sites will still have a tough time, because people are mostly unwilling to pay for content and advertising is a tough sell right now in any medium. These facts hit close to home for me about two months ago when I lost my job as a magazine editor, the best job I ever had. It's a dying industry. :nervous: Plus, I much prefer Scuba Diving over Sport Diver. Sport Diver has good photos, but editorially it is so lame it needs crutches.

I've been happy with the direction they've taken in the past 2 years. I hope that the new ownership continues that trend. I used to treat their magazine as a coffee table one. I actually read it now (have gotten it for free for years).

It's my understanding the layoffs have already started at SDM.

:depressed:

I read the magazine every month and had written a couple of pieces for it. I know one or two people who worked there. I will miss their insights every month. Guess its all part of consolidation. Anyone remember Underwater USA?

The old newspaper right? That was fantastic

Glad I didn't renew....

So am I. Crap. I only get it now thanks to Scuba Toys giving me a subscription. They just sent me a renewal offer of 16 bucks and I could give two gift subscriptions at no charge. I almost fell for it. I think I'm gonna check out Advanced Diver and Wreck Diver mags. The reason I never renewed scuba diving my self was the direction it was taking. No serious tech reviews, all pretty fish diving for the most part, and their tests were little more than a joke. If an advertiser did not send them gear it did not get reviewed. If they'd gone out and bought the stuff and did real unbiased reviews it might have made them more credible.

Jim...
Wreck Diving Magazine is a fantastic magazine even if one is not into wreck diving. The photos are great! But the greatest thing about Wreck Diving Magazine is the history that each article provides...
Joe Porter and his wife Heidi are great people and along with their staff put out a magazine that, IMHO, ranks among the top of the top when it comes to diving magazines. You can't go wrong with subscribing to it.
