I am one of the biggest jokesters there is. On the boat, after the dive,, yea, I'm all for it. once your in the water,, way to serious of a time to be startled or surprised. Like the old saying goes " its all fun and games until someone gets hurt"

Another no vote. If anybody were to mess with with my gear, they'd find themself walking home (this includes boat dives). The chocolate gold coins are about the only maybe I've seen.

Geez folks, lighten up! :D

Messing with a regulator, turning off air, and things of that nature are OBVIOUSLY not funny. Hanging rubber chickens off a tank, non staining/non polluting dyes, or a tennis ball in a BC pocket is just good fun. Diving is fun, and no harm, no impact practical jokes are in that spirit.

I prefer land based practical jokes.

I have a roll of police tape that says "Unsafe Vehicle" on it that I am patiently biding my time to use. Have a friend who's scuba-mobile is a hunk of poo. Would love to wrap his vehicle while he is in the water at our local pond.

How awesome would that be?????? You get out of the water and your hunk of c r a p truck has police tape/UNSAFE VEHICLE all over it. Oh, and the cell phone service is very iffy in that park so, calling for help or confirmation may or may not happen. Still wish I had pulled that one in Bonaire........

As far as pranks go.....I prefer to prank friends that I know can take it and will hopefully prank me back. For example, I would never put green food coloring in anyone's boots if I thought they would cry about it. Fortunately, I have lots of friends that don't cry. And as far as safety, hot sauce on a reg is pretty stupid/dangerous. Good common sense goes a long way.

Pranks are not for everyone. But, fake farts are.

Stick a Tennis ball in their BC pocket before a deep dive. Makes a nice pop on the way back up.

Have you actually done this? There shouldn't be any more air in the ball on the way up than there was on the way down. It should compress during the dive, then re-expand during ascent to its original size.

If you have actually done this, I'd be very interested in trying to figure out where the extra air in the ball came from. I'm also curious how someone could be so clueless about their gear so as not to notice something the size of a tennis ball in a pocket.

In case anyone is curious, a PETE water bottle filled with air at 120 feet of seawater does not pop on ascent based on personal experimentation. It just bulges slightly. I ran some numbers using burst pressures on those bottles and figured you'd have to fill the bottle at over 300 feet to have much chance of popping near the surface. I wonder what the burst pressure on a tennis ball is.

I agree very deadly.

( Hanging rubber chickens off a tank,)

I disagree, what if he goes through a swim through and your not there to untangle him. Is that when you say, "Man that was funny, did you see him turn blue."?

(non staining/non polluting dyes,)

Why put unecessary fluids in our oceans. What type of polluter are you, a eco-polluter?

( or a tennis ball in a BC pocket is just good fun.)

Imagine ascending and you here a loud 'pop'. Just freaking imagine......

( Diving is fun,)

It is for me, it wouldnt be for you if you touched my gear!

(and no harm)

provided you dont touch my gear!

( no impact practical jokes are in that spirit.)

No such thing as a practical joke that does not create excitement, now put that at 4ata

I love to laugh and have a blast. As a matter of fact ask the Nuns that used to give me the strap in school as to how much fun I liked to have.
Diving is not a game. It is life support with fun thrown in as a side affect.
I sure hope those that condon this will please have a second thought about putting your FRIENDS LIFE in jeapordy. Ok my heart is slowing down now.

I'm midway on this. I thought the blue rubber "rare Carribean frog fish" was hillarious. I still get a giggle.
I would imagine lots of young guys would chuckle about the u/w farting.

Some of this other stuff is just plain malicious and really is mean to do anywhere.

Ok lets say a newbie diver reads what you posted. And thinks well if a SB staff member says these are OK, then why not. Puts a tennis ball in buddy's pocket and as they buddy ascends he hears the pop.....buddy doesn't know what it is, panics and bolts to the surface. Hmmmmmmm

I love to have fun. I drink hard, I push limits. Ask my friends. I am the biggest prankster out there. I LOVE practical jokes. But you would NEVER see me doing one on a diver.

Red non staining dye......could distract someone, maybe I cut my foot, better check that before I go in....oh better hurry up now everyone is in the water. Jump in, vest not inflated, air not on....panic.....sink to bottom.

If you have read about dive accidents/air crashes it is often times something innocuous that starts a chain reaction of events that ends up in death.

I don't even know what the legal ramifications of posting a practical joke here on SB are. What if a diver does something he read here? What happens to person who posted practical joke? What are SB's liabilities?

The way I see it too much downside risk here..........that is my opinion. You just don't know what chain of events you could be setting off.

Sure you can tell me to lighten up, scuba diving is fun. Yes it is fun. I love it. But really think long and hard about this topic. I am no kill-joy.
