Hi,
I have the A720IS with the Canon housing.
Now looking to get an external flash to go with it. Sadly all my Sea & Sea stuff will not work. The flash is to old.

So I am asking for recommendations as what I could get, without spending a fortune, as I currently out of work.

TIA

I have a Canon a650IS with the Canon housing. I use a Sea & Sea YS-27DX strobe. The Canon housing doesnt have support for the fiber optic cable so you have to use the included mask kit with your strobe to cover the area on the case that the white clip on diffuser covers.

There are some pictures on the forum here if you use the search button. I would also be happy to take a picture of my exact setup for you if needed.

I am very happy with my strobe setup for the camera. The YS-27DX is a great strobe for the camera and provides ample lighting. My strobe came with the ball & arm tray (see Sea and Sea YS-27DX Strobe Kit).

Try putting the A720IS in manual mode with no AF or red eye flash. I tried this and my old Sealife flash. I was able to get it to work as the camera does not give the preflash when I do this. Check it by taking pictures in a mirror. If you see the flash in the mirror, your golden.

Down side is in manual, you have to set the camera like the old film cameras.

Good luck,

John

If you go into Menu on the camera and select flash to manual it cancels the preflash mode. The you can use Av, Tv or Manual (top mode dial) with no preflash from the camera.

Selecting the camera to Auto or to Program overrides the Manual flash setting and the preflash returns until you re-select the Av, Tv or Manual modes.

Once you select the Manual flash mode in Menu go to Function Set and reduce flash power output to 1/3 setting.

The A series like your 720/640/570/590 and even the G series have similar Func Set and Menu routines with some subtle differences. thing is you should be able to get your strobe to work. If at first it does not seem to work with these settings increase the flash power output to 2/3 and try again. Some of these YS strobes are not as sensitive it seems and fail to trigger on a low signal.

Sadly that flash setup costs more than the camera and housing combined, and way out of my price range at the moment. I did say i was out of work. :)

Thanks anyway for the post. I apologize for the delay in replying, but I had email notification set to weekly and not instant.

My stuff is so old. I have a YS-50/TTL flash, which does not have a slave mode.

Edit. You have given me an idea as to whether to try a slave mode flash, if I can pick one up at a reasonable price.

I think a slave flash will work if you set your 720 flash to manual in Av or Tv and of course in manual the camera strobe should revert to manual thus eliminating the preflash.

I just picked up an Intova ISS 200 flash head for $120. I set to one preflash and it works great. Can't wait to try it in water.

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.
Sorry again for the delay, but only just got the message today?. Thought my 'instant email notification' had not set, but it has, so I am a loss as to why it has taken a week to reach me.?

I'd very much like to see the results, as I will not get to try mine out until about November. That flash looks good for the price.
