There is a pesky thing called "Rock Bottom" or did you not see what forum you are in?
PfcAJ clarified his "half way" comment nicely - half way out, not when the dive is turned, so we are in total agreement.

I also know what forum I am in and believ eit or not I am familiar with the rock bottom concept (independent instructors and divers promoted DIR and DIR concepts before GUE was around). But "rock bottom" is no better than the assumptions and conservatism used to figure it prior to the dive. Consequently, if the conditions change to the extent that the beginning assumptions and conservatism used are no longer valid, rock bottom is not going to cut it. That is one of the reasons why 2 person teams are problematic and three is preferred, it adds an additional margin of reserve gas when a change in initial conditons invalidates the initial assumptions.

Interestingly enough, GUE no longer uses either of the terms "rock bottom" or "DIR." Who says the system never changes? :D

And Halcyon DIR Dive Systems is just Halcyon Dive Systems now, I think its good to get away from the DIR thing, it pisses off WAY too many people.

Nice to hear a DIR diver suggesting this. As a DIR outsider, the DIR system could be the greatest thing since swiss cheese, but the pretentious name of Doing It Right is a huge turn off.

That's a good thing, especially after they started making that CCR wing. :D

Seems to work for DiveRite.

Or Rite Aid, ShopRite, or any number of other shops/services/etc. The type of person who can get hung up on a name like this tends not to be the type to take very well to DIR anyway. No big loss.

I tried carrying that banner (dropping DIR as a label) a few years ago on scubaboard (long before DIRF became GUEF) then gave up on trying to change the world. Its just a name. If you get offended with DIR divers implicitly talking about you diving 'wrong' the problem isn't actually with DIR divers or GUE.

Maybe it is the above tone or attitude about many DIR divers that pisses people off.

It is marketing 101. If your name is problem, change it. It is even politics 101. If your bill isn't going to pass, change the name to something more palatable.

The sad thing is, like I mentioned above, is DIR could be the greatest thing since swiss cheese. From what I have uncovered through research, conversations is that the DIR philosophy and practices make a lot of sense.

The loss is really to the DIR philosophy and way. As DIR divers maybe you could self police or moderate yourselves?

The information I get from the DIR forum tends to be clear and concise.

Unfortunately it is comments like this that piss off and turn people off from DIR.

:cussing: Rainer.

As I said, if people get so pissed off because of this, no big loss (to me). I'd rather dive with those who aren't so ... precious.

If DIR was called DIW, I'd still dive the same. Life is too short to care about a name like this. Go champion a real cause.
