The extra boat will make it interesting. They will have to take 1/2 of the competent crew members and put that person on the earthrace boat. With the competent people spread thin, there will be no end to the entertainment value of the schemes they come up with.

Their big problem is personnel, not equipment.

The Earthrace boat has prior experience running into other vessels.

I'd bet that "Earthrace" will get trashed by either the Antarctic Seas or a whaling boat within a year or two of service.

It looks like a little toy.

It's a prop for filming, as soon as they get their publicity shots, it doesn't matter.

The good news is that if they run out of fuel, they can use blubber. I wonder how many miles they can get out of a good size whale. Looks like a new market for whale oil.

Demonstrating further commitment to the cause, Bethune underwent liposuction and donated enough to produce 100ml of biofuel, while two other, larger volunteers also had the procedure, making a total of 10 litres of human fat.
This in turn produced seven litres of biofuel, which could help the boat travel about 15km.

fireflock, have you been reading any of the posts or links?

The owner/inventor of EarthRace is the Captain of this ship which requires a one man crew. All he needs is an eye candy mate for good video and squeeling soundtrack.

Said owner/inventor/Captain is not likely to hit or be hit by other ships in the Antarctic.

Where did you learn your debating style? Sarah Palin?

I think it will do just fine intercepting harpoons.
The third ship? Maybe a supply ship so that Sea Shepherd
doesn't have to come in for fuel? I see reduced quotas
this year for the Japanese. I'm sure that Sea Shepherd isn't
revealing all that they have up there sleeves. Stay tuned.

four men crew.

Boat crew: Skipper, Pete Bethune (New Zealand); Navigator, Adam Carlson (Sweden); Mark Russell, Engineer (UK and USA); Rob Drewett, Cameraman (UK)

I can't make this point strongly enough. There is no "illegal" or "legal" because there are NO laws governing the take of marine animals--fish or mammal--in international waters. There are international conventions that have little or no binding power or punitive capacity. There is no protection for any marine animal except those exerted by local sovereignties on their waters and their citizens and by the extent they enforce them--which is often nonexistent.
Well then send your comments to National Geographic. I know what I saw. They did DNA testing because there are species they are not supposed to sell. Perhaps those further down the endangered species chart. Regardless, they used the term "illegal".

I found this on my first google scan
http://www.hsus.org/press_and_publi...s_need_for_commercial_whaling_moratorium.html

The DNA test results demonstrate that a ‘legal’ market for whale meat can be a shield for illegal kills of endangered species

Last year the Japanese gave themselves permission to take 50 endangered fin whales.
You want to know how many they got? One. Why? Because there aren't any *******ing
fin whales. If they could have taken 50 they sure as hell would have.

The one man crew has been covered. You just can't run a speedboat of that size with 1 person.

Am I the only one who reads the plan to intercept harpoons and shakes my head? You're going to attempt to run your 78ft vessel in between a harpoon ship and a whale in a deliberate attempt to have your vessel block a harpoon? That's a recipe for hitting something with your boat (whale or harpoon boat) or being hit by the harpoon vessel.

It will make for exciting TV.
