Cozumel in November 2009

I'm on my first trip to Cozumel...arrived two days ago. Wonderful diving yesterday. On my way out now for another day.

One question...

It seems REALLY empty here. There is nobody at the hotel pool, the restaurants and bars seem empty, we walked around the main plaza last night and it looked to be almost entirely locals. Is this typical for this time of year? It seems like this should be a busy week. Or, is this a function of poor economy and/or H1N1 paranoia?

Not that I'm complaining...I didn't come down here to see lots of American tourists. I'm just surprised.

Just wait! Tell me what you think after today - three full flights arriving just today! This is a very busy week - but the weekends are always transitionary periods with people coming and going.

Big day here today. Big storm and huge wave put three boats on the rocks. Air viz was less than 1/4 mile, and rain was blowing sideways.
Haven't heard of anyone hurt...

Diving Santa Rosas Wall when it hit. Quite bit of caos when we surfaced...divers everywhere and huge waves. All got on our boat quite quickley and efficiently despite it all. Saw one boat beached and underwater south of Fiesta Americana..appeared that everyone was safe onshore.
Still did a second dive at Paradise Reef and was all calm on surfacing. An adventure in diving to say the least at the time. Hopefully all divers got home safely today.

We were, ironically enough, diving Tormentos for the tormentos. Marcelo was bring active and sticking close in the boat above, but I didn't think too much about it, since Angel was doing the same up at Barracuda Tuesday, when seas were up.

When he called David up, I was surprised. They told us about it when we surfaced after it'd calmed significantly. Got in a full dive, so it wasn't a biggie for us, but then we saw the boats on the rocks and the patrol out helping another.

On the way out to the night dive we saw one all but completely u/w. Only the wheel was showing.

Boat time! Gotta run.
