In the last week, I've had three different people tell me that they were glad to have finally gotten to dive with me, because previously they were afraid to.

Afraid to? Afraid to dive with ME? Good heavens.

But now I'm beginning to understand why I keep offering to dive with new divers and nobody takes me up on it.

Based on your postings, they see a perceived level of expectations or excellence that they don't feel they can live up to. Many of them may not have been here when you joined, watched your struggle to get a grip on this whole diving thing, and make the progress that you've done.

They are afraid that you will see them as less than perfect and no one wants to feel less than perfect in front of someone they look up to and respect.

Like it or not Lynne, you have a pretty big following here that feels that way about you and don't want to disappoint you. Just because they have that fear doesn't mean that it's warranted.

I don't know you from adam. what i DO know is that you have posted a bunch on this board, and you seem very attuned to what your limitations are. my rule: i will dive with anybody that knows what their limits are, be you very experienced or brand new. what i will not do is dive with somebody that has far over-reaching expectations regarding their capabilities i.e. ego.

so, based on what you've posted i would absolutely dive with you! and i hope you find some great dive buddies!

Yes, would love to. On my list of people I would like to dive with off Scubaboard you are in one of the top spots mainly because your posts + also blog helped me heaps, especially in the beginning as I struggled so much with diving. I remember thinking perhaps I shouldn't keep diving as I was so bad but seeing your stories (and a few other people who were very encouraging) made me think there was hope for me yet :) And yea, it's been nearly two years diving, I have over 300 dives and have dived in all sorts of cool places, as well as starting to go further with the type of diving I do, so I'm glad I kept at it!

No way I've seen what you tried to do to Captain Piccard.

:rofl3:

Ditto what they said (or is that thritto)?

Your posts inspire me to continue learning and improving my own skills. And like you I'm also short not-a-youngun-anymore, so I find your perspective encouraging.

And YES I look forward to diving with you one of these days. Go "Lady Power Rangers".

Yes, but I would expect many hours of discussions and exchange before and after the dive(s).:D

Well, I think the people I was talking to either thought I'd find them wanting or felt like I was too "exalted" to want to dive with them . . . but shoot, on my bad days, I still have buoyancy control issues (although they aren't measured in meters any more, but just in feet). And I just nearly lost it in midwater because of vertigo . . . why would anybody think I was intimidating? I don't get it.

Lynne,

Would love to dive with you and hope to one day get up there. My wife and I keep talking about it but it hasn't made the schedule yet. Would also love to do dinner when we do make it.

I you have time for dinner when you are down here we are buying (it includes Peter).

I even have a cousin in Victoria who would like to see us get up there.

Dang you, I wanted to make the Star Trek joke :(

Well to be honest I'm not too keen on doctors....

I suppose if the chance came up I would :D

Honestly though, I can't think of anyone I'd be afraid to dive with (well until we got to the dive site...). I like diving with people with more skill then me. Allows me to learn more.

Well, let's see. Your avatar is the Borg Queen, no one I want to get close to, and your name is somewhat reminiscent of a "perversion". It's only a little off-putting.
