I was six when my dad (then an archaeologist) saw Cousteau's Silent World and got the idea to attempt to recover Babylonian artifacts from a barge that sank in the mid 19th century at the confluence of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. We were already avid freedivers. He bought two tanks, two regulators, and a copy of the Science of Skin and Scuba ... I've been at it ever since.

I am new to the game starting 3 yrs ago at 38! Definitely wish I would have done this back in my 20's! Better late than never!

Wow, that certainly sounds better than those first dives I made within sight of Rockaway Beach. Did you find any amphorae? We recovered some beer bottles.:D

Was 24.. by the time I got certified (the class took forever) essay exam (got busted on spellin') The gear rustic (compared to today)..a harness to hold the tank on, a newfangled (modern) first generation, single hose reg (barely any air flow) no gauges..(buoyant butt divin')..with a mask the size of a bucket..(took dozen, or so, full snorts to clear)..used visual color changes for depth (barely could breathe past 60' anyway) Still divin' and lovein' it!
(spellin' hasn't improved any)

Went for a try dive on holiday when I was 47, then signed up for an OW course and never looked back. Divemaster and AI before 50 and then OWI at end of the same year. Have been lucky enough to retire early and be able to follow the dream of being and Instructor in the SUN (here in Tenerife). Not a job that pay's a lot but enjoyable!!
As many others has said wished I had started when I was younger!
