See post #96

paulwall I'm planning on Ft. Pickens on the 23rd at 1:30 for a 2-tank dive.

7mm 2-piece with hood. I may need to borrow an anchor to get down, though...
I may try to hit the wall at Perdido Point on Sunday

Coldest winter in 25 years apparently, there was ice forming along the shores of Mobile Bay, seriously. With slush washing ashore elsewhere.

I figured it'd be a record low year when I heard that... and worked outside for the past two weeks - ugh.

Sorry, too cold for my oldass 5mm to handle :/ Gonna head elsewhere.

It will be warmer next week. I will let you know after my dive this weekend.

Mat!!! What happened to our shore diving guru???? You can handle those temps without a hood..

Let us know. I am still in if everyone else is willing to try it. My only issue is that I have not figured out how much weight I will need in the ocean with a 7ml crushed neoprene drysuit and a single tank. Doubles in fresh water and I don't need any. Someone may have to help me to the water...and out..

I'm still in as long as the air is warmer than the water.

Working towards being there also!! As of yesterday, I have the same drysuit you have and the same problem. This and the fact that I should probably try it in freshwater before attempting the jetties. I may do that on Friday and then join everyone on the 23rd, but not sure yet.

Here is this past weekends report. Arrived at 8:00am on Saturday. We set up the tent in the rain. Hooked up the T.V and found that it did not survive the trip. Rushed to walmart and purchased a new HDTV and an Antenna that could pick up Fox 43 miles away. We were able to watch the Saints game and we were glad the camp survived the nights 35 MPH gust winds through out the night. The roads were almost completely covered in sand and my kids thought we were in the desert. Sunday was better but a little chili as we enjoyed our tour of Ft Pickens. Today was outstanding weather wise and I am unable to give a dive report. The Jetties were like glass and it was very tempting but I had to get back on the road. If we have weather like this next weekend we will have an awesome time.

I camped at Loop E on Site E66 under an oak tree. This is probably where I will be again next weekend(100 yards from the shower facilities). After you enter the park and pay your $8.00 fee head to the ranger station(first big white building on the right). In front of the Ranger station is a glass booth where you will find a light yellow envelope. Take this to your site of your choice and fill out the information and insert payment(Cash,Check, or credit card info). The stub goes on the post in front your site and the envelope goes back the Ranger station booth in the drop box. They check this post for your stub every morning. You are allowed 2 tents per site, two vehicles(including any trailers Denise) and up to six people. Any other vehicles will have to park in the overflow lot which is not far from the area I was camping in. It looks like the weather is going to be nice. Highs at 70 and lows around 40. High tide is in the afternoon which should be awesome. With these temps there is no excuse not to attend. I should be there when the park opens on Friday morning. I drive a White 2001 F150 and have a huge light green tent. Once I am set up I will set out to acquire firewood. You are allowed to use the wood on the ground. If you know you are coming confirm by posting here so that we can start planning meals. As in Springfest we usually bring a little food to share with every one. We always wind up with way too much. So I thought we should plan out some kind of menu. This past weekend I baked leg quarters with yellow rice in my dutch oven. It will feed 4 people($5.00 meal) and it was awesome. I could cook enough for eight with two ovens. We would need a couple of sides to go with it and it takes care of one meal. Every site has a grill. We are open for ideas and comments so lets get it going.

I hope to see everyone there.

I don't know how much weight I will need either. I was hoping to do a test run this weekend, but did not get a chance. I think I will need at least 20lbs. Maybe we can get a weight check in before the dives.

I was planning on getting over to Ft Pickens around 1:00 pm on Friday (Jan 22nd) to get ready for a 1:30 splash. If you want to, get there a little earlier and test things out. If you can't I am not in a major hurry and I will wait for you. I think that 20 pounds will get you in the ball park.

Denise,

I believe that your drysuit is 7mm neoprene crushed down to 5mm thickness. Since you are already using a backplate with your steel tanks you may be fine starting out with 10 extra pounds. You might find that you can drop some of that weight.

A quick weight check will sort everything out for both of you. The nice thing about Ft. Pickens is that if you need more weight it is only a short walk back to the car to fix, or you can just bring your excess weight down with you and leave it where we tie-off the flag.

I think I may bring my 5mm merino lined wetsuit w/ hood for this dive. It keeps me super warm in the springs even when I am not moving around much. Although I will also bring my semi dry just in case .
