What is you budget, and what are you prepared to spend? I am sure you can get yourself top class stuff & OW C Card for around $3000 :D Decide what you want to do, speak to an instructor.

I would suggest renting kit until you are clear on what your requirements are. I believe in buying equipment once!

"Good quality kit, tailored for your needs and requirements"

$2k - I carry more than that in accessories nowadays . . . :)

Accessories? You (and I) probably carry more than that in lights alone!

I record all my expenses in an accounting program and also give them categories. I am now too scared to click on the scuba diving category to see what I have spent...

I did calculate recently that I wear about $7.5k worth of gear when cave diving though  And I don't have fancy gear or anything either...

I DON'T have a "scuba diving" category in my financial software...

Custom fit drysuit: $2,100
21w HID cannister light: $1,259
Gas-switching computer: $1,500
Miscellaneous bits and bobs: $4,500

Your wife believing it was all "$30 on ebay" - PRICELESS!

My partner just never asks. He asked me how much my fins and mask were when I started diving and was shocked so stopped asking when he saw new gear show up :D

Yeah, I've told my buddies "If I die, please promise you won't let my wife sell my gear for what I told her I paid for it!"

:shocked2:

I just purchased my own gear in April of this year. I went in thinking I was going to spend about $1500.00. I ended up spending about $2000.00. This does not include tanks, but includes bags (regulator and equipment), suit, weights, BCD, regulator, gloves, hood, hangers, computer, and small other accessories. Be careful when purchasing new gear!!! There are several package deals that out there that look tempting, but the equipment in the packages is not quality equipment. My best suggestion to you is to shop around, try things on, and get quotes from the stores. I had the help of my boyfriend to decide what you want. Try and have someone knowledgable go with you or ask around before buying, because some stores will try and sell you equipment that you either don't need, is too involved for just recreational diving, or they are trying to get rid of equipment that has been around their stores for awhile. You will know what you want once you start trying on stuff and becoming more familiar with what is out there. It took me a couple of months to make a decision and even then when I received my equipment there was adjustments to be made. Don't let this frustrate you it is normal and everyone idea of comfort and the best is different. One more idea when purchasing equipment get fin straps put on your fins, they are key to getting your fins on and off quick and easy. Most stores and change your regular straps on your fins to the spring straps (they are awesome)Happy Diving!!!!!!:D

how much does all the diving stuff come up to? i estimated about $1100 for me to gety in the water not counting the cert price so how much would it cost?

That seems about right, the dive packages seem to save you some money if you go that route and you can mix match at most of the online dive stores if they don't have exactly what you want. Pay attention though, I've been on a quest for my own stuff, and I've noticed that at one store they might have for example, an oceanic cruz package, with the GT3 regulators that retail for $370 and another store will have the package with the Neo regulators that retail for $530 both packages costing $1000 with the same BCD, and computer console. You might as well get the slightly better model for the same price, assuming that it is a little nicer.

What surprises me is the cost of weights. I haven't bought weights yet, but it will probably be around $100 for lead. Granted I can rent it but for a euro a kilo but it pays for itself after 9 dives to buy it. Same thing with tanks, I think they would almost pay for themselves after ten or so dives.

It is expensive upfront, but afterwards air and water are cheap.

$300 total cost.

Oh you want to own your own mask fins, well then $600

Oh you dive local and want a tank, regulator, bc, um high end or low end? 1100-2500

What you want to night dive and keep track of your dive profile? 3-4k

Oh really you like that cave stuff, um let see at 6% interest and a new wife um lets just say 10k and 1/2 your property.

Oh photography is your thing, well no one really knows the true cost of that you see it is all done with mirrors, but man are the pictures cool.

no you really do not want a rebreather, but the training is sometime free if that tells you anything.

let see a length of string is usually about 6" short.
